My muzzleloader

LAST EDITED ON Oct-24-18 AT 09:28PM (MST)[p]I finally did the finishing touches to my muzzleloader and I figured I would share. I have killed 2 mule deer bucks over the last 3 years with it was basically how it is now but with a radial brake. One at 250 yards which was a wide 2x2 Muley and this year I took a meat buck at 280 yards.

Savage small shank short action
28? Brux .458 barrel tipped with a new LR Customs brake.
XLR element chassis (I share between two actions)
Topped with a Nightforce SHV 4-14

Load is 95gr by weight if BH209
.452 344 grain Bombs (kenitic preformance runs a few 344 for me and a few others)
Mag CCI 209

The gun is smokeless capable but I use bh209 for legal hunting. 95 gr is a pretty light load for it but produces the perfect amount of residue in the barrel to get consistence groups shooting sabotless. Based off my kestrel ballistics calculator, the bullets going 2250 FPS and has a BC of .380.

I know some will say it is poor taste for a ?primitive? weapon but I enjoy building rifles and shooting long range. I figure I would share it. Just put the new brake on that really makes the gun enjoyable to shoot and there is nothing else I will do to it.

I can't say it is my cup of tea, but I definitely admire the work for what it is. As a person who likes to dabble with AR's, because I can, I definitely appreciate what you are trying to accomplish here.

Any ideas of how far you can push it, and get actual numbers at those ranges with a chronograph?

Being that we can't use scopes in NV, expanding much on a simple peep sight muzzle loader has not caught my attention.

2250 FPS is by my mangetospeed (3 average no brake) and the BC of .380 based off of my kestrels ballistic calculator validated with a 100 yard zero and my drop at 725 yards.

I was shooting a heavier Bh209 load but fouling was pretty bad if I need a second shot.

I have pushed it twice to 725 yards (held 1 Moa) and routinely shoot it at 400-500 yards. Gun shoots better than me.

Here is what it looks like on paper:

I want to go back to a fast twist .45 muzzy for long range. I don't know of anybody building a factory rifle these days that fits the bill.

This is a order the parts and spin them on to a Savage bolt action. Barrel, plug, bolt face for 209, and set headspacing easy to do yourself following the headspacing directions.

Originally, the setup was on a Savage axis shot fine but when I found a cheap Stevens 200 that fit in my XLR Chassis I picked it up.

Pretty cool. Pretty sure CVA just came out with a .45 that is capable of shooting 140 grains by volume of BH209...not sure what that would actually be by weight.

The CVA Paramount is the newest. .45cal, 1in22" twist.

Not available yet. Also new is the Accura v2/lr with a .45cal 1in22" 30" barrel. It's half the price of the Paramount.

It would be interesting to see how these handle .40 caliber sabots with a 220 grain bullet.

I shot 95 grains by weight (which is just under 140 by volume which is 98 roughly) with a 344 gr sabotless. I also shot 105 and the FPS were about the same. All with CCI mags.

I tried sabots with 105 gr by wieght and the gun was blowing the sabots. The Sabot limits the pressure by failing before the gun would making it safer. It will be interesting to see if they recommend sabotless.

Not a lot of 40 cal high BC bullets that work out of a sabot. Cutting edge has one that's pretty good.

Parker does have a new Match Hunter .40 and makes me wish my gun built as a 40.
