Training shed dogs....?

So I have a 3 year old lab and we've started to train him on shed hunting. I'm as new to shed hunting as he is... He is doing very well and finds them pretty well, and brings them back to us? but he is a long ways from perfect.

What do you guys do with your dogs for training that has helped them? Planning on getting a shock collar but are they necessary really? Any help would be great!

The only reason I would worry about getting a shock collar is if he will not respond to every command. If he takes off chasing a rabbit or deer or whatever you need to be able to call him off right away. If he doesn't listen then give him a little reminder jolt. :)

As far as training just praise and give treats whenever he brings you an antler. He will learn what you want and if it makes you happy and he gets food he should want to keep doing it as often as possible. Pretty simple huh! :)

Good luck,

If it's a lab throwing the Antler for him after he finds it is the best reward! I've done treats and tried even carrying a tennis ball. As far as the tennis ball it was like dangling crack in front of a crack addict and my dog couldn't focus on anything. Train them to think it's playtime. If they think an Antler is a toy they will be more inclined to find them
