Hello everyone I have never hunted anything in my life and now at 40, well I have a lot of learning to do. Father never hunted and grandfather's died before I was 6 so just reading. I heard of shed hunting so a start to get a idea of everything. But nows the question when to start? Any good pointers for me.

thanks for your time.

Syanidi, what part of Colorado are you in? I am in Montrose. The deer start shedding towards the end of February and it seems about 50% drop by mid-March and usually they are all done by early April. The elk seem to start dropping in mid-March and most of the sheds are on the ground by May 1st with a few elk still holding on. What you need to do is find the wintering areas and start watching from a distance so as not to disturb the animals. Wait till mid-March and just start walking those areas and you should find some. It takes some practice to train your eyes to see them and once you start finding them you will quickly get addicted and you will dream of sheds and wear out a lot of boots. I find sheds year-round as long as there isn't too much snow on the ground. Have fun!

>I just saw a shed buck
>yesterday, so you could start
>right now.

Or maybe let the deer and elk winter without being pushed around for some antlers. Just a thought.

Hi Syanidi,

Welcome to shed hunting! Here's a tip, when I hike I keep the image of an antler (elk or mule deer) in my mind, it seems to help me recognize the shape much better as I scan the terrain. I walk the local mountains here in CO. Along with finding some nice sheds for your collection, you will possibly lose weight and greatly improve your cardio health a lot by hiking. I'm 50 and can outwalk most of my 40 year old friends.

Good Luck!
