Anyone have any tips/tricks for antler restoration. I've got an Oregon Blacktail I want to do. Antlers are stained and have some checking (cracking).

I've read several blogs on doing it. Some say to paint white and use stain, some say use Potassium Permanganate.

Any tips?

Use Mud! Mix up some dark dirt and rub it onto the antlers. Put it really thick and let it dry. Scrape it off with a brush after and then put a light coat of linseed oil on there.

use some pine pitch, diluted with lacquer thinner, apply with a brush & sprinkle local area dirt of desired color. Rub so dirt gets in cracks & scratches, it gets buffed off the higher spots. Then let set..........if you don't like, it comes off with more lacquer thinner and retry. It's easy & don't fret if you don't like the first run, you can always redo.

Test various methods on other antlers first to see what you like. I have also used mud with great results.
