Shed season

Who feels it would help the herds out if the dwr out a shed season in place with very stiff fines if caught? I have been shed hunting since I could drive. The last three years has been the worst I have ever seen it. I see post on FB of people going out in December and January trying to find sheds. It's not fair to the game in those areas. One of my all time favorite honey holes is no longer a secret. I took my three year old daughter out to go for a drive in the hills. Didn't see but two does in an area where we would have seen close to a hundred deer. Decided to get out and take her for a little walk to look for sign. The only sign I saw was boot tracks and atv tracks. I'm getting sick of all the good winter areas getting pounded so early an pushing the animals out of the area. I would love to see the western states out a season into place. With penalties similar to poaching. Maybe it would keep the idiots at home so the herds can have a decent winter with out being pushed all over the mountain. I'm just ranting and pissed off how social media has destroyed something I grew up being very passionate about.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-19-14 AT 10:54PM (MST)[p]Please don't start this debate again. It is what it is, the deer will adapt or die, this is the way of the world. A shed season helps nobody, just adds another law that is impossible to enforce. With laws like you propose on the books, your afternoon "scouting" trip would be under scrutiny. Let this sleeping dog be.

That's just it the deer shouldn't have to adapt or die. It's thinking like that why shed hunting has become what it has become. I won't go out until mid April and I will still pick up antlers an in the process I won't disturb the game. I'm all for a shed season it may be hard to enforce but if I saw anyone hiking around with antlers attached to their pack, I wouldn't hesitate to call it in. I go out this time of year but I stick to the roads. Glassine from a distance. To each their own but the deer and elk shouldn't have to adapt because of irresponsible humans.

Thanks Tines up!

Shed hunting laws would make it illegal for you to glass, even from a distance/the road. Creating laws and enforcing laws are entirely different. Most (all?) western states don't have the resources to enforce shed hunting laws. If they did, there would already be laws in place.

Look at Wyoming. The honest people wait because of the laws, and the criminals just go pick up all the horn. You see people complaining about it all the time.

I'm more a fan of Montana style, closed WMA's/refuges, as opposed to a state wide law, like Wyoming. It creates pockets of refuge for the animals, and it's actually enforceable.

Its a bummer for sure. If a shed season would stop people from harassing the deer, I would be in favor of it. But it will stop law abiding people from scouting, snowshoeing, chukar hunting, cougar hunting, coyote hunting, etc and the culls will still go out pick up all the horns. It would be great if people would self-regulate but they don't. Not sure what the answer is, wish it was easy to fix.

folks get cabin fever this time of year and are going to go out and hike a ridge or two. it just happens that the areas where the snow melts and the mud drys up is the same areas where the deer and elk are for the same reason. it dose not matter if their packs are dayglow green or camo they will be there. the prombem is the guys that have no clue in life, the same guys leave their beer cans all over. if a dog goes out and chases deer it gets shot. it should be the same for those idiots that push em just to watch em run. now there is your penalty.

Keep in mind that shed hunters are not the only people in the hills during the winter. You have hikers, snowshoe guys, cross country skiers, snowmobilers, and the average guy taking his dog for a walk. I watched a runner spook about 50 head of deer out of the area they had been in for the last week or so. She had no idea there were deer there and has no idea what a "Shed" is. Who is going to tell her she can't run in the hills behind her house anymore?

Do you suggest we tell everyone in the world that they are not allowed to be anywhere near a deer during the winter? This law will never work, and I don't see why there are countless posts on this every year.

You have to understand that people have a right to be in the mountains. There will always be people that don't care about the deer, people that have no clue about the deer, and people looking for sheds.

It sucks, and I wish there was something we could do. But it won't work. Unfortunately you just have to deal with it. Deer will shed in december and all through march. That's a big time frame to keep people out of the mountains.

I'm 100% against a shed season. Why are people so willing to give away their freedoms? Government should be much more limited than it currently is, and then there are people out there suggesting that they come in and regulate our lives even more. I think that forcing shed hunters to do an online course is allready too intrusive. If you keep down the road of suggesting shed seasons, the DWR will want to charge for shed gathering permits to pay for regualtion. Pretty soon there would end up being a drawing for LE shed hunting areas as a way to increase DWR revenue. Next thing you know there will be point creep, 30 gathering units, and liitle opportunity to take your boys out for an afternnon of antler gathering.

It is possible to be in the hills in the winter and not harass the wildlife. Leave government out of shed gathering!

who is fat? anybody 1 lb. heavier than me
Who is stupid? anybody 5 pts lower than me on the old IQ scale
Who is harassing the game? anybody who goes out 1 day earlier than me!

Human nature and some will gladly empower the gov't to get even with any pot they deem to be a shade darker than their own kettle. And the DOW is salivating at the chance to be handed this club to use as THEY see fit. And once they have it they will determine how and on whom to use it, some will be well deserved and some will just use it to settle scores. Some real some imagined.

Shed season: just the beginning with dates and fines then come permits, pay double and get special dispensation??? maybe put one up for auction??? Can you say gov tag shed permits?? Of course we will put one up for a lottery for the pitchfork crowd...

After a local acquittal "God is a game warden, we'll nail his ass next time..." Acquittal mind you as in found NOT GUILTY... Think that guy would get a ticket for pulling over talking on his phone with binos on the seat next to him??? I do.

Arbitrary dates are stupid, level of snowpack changes drastically and by the week let alone the year. Purpose driven tickets are stupid when one can hunt rabbits/coyotes on the ridge but look at a horn and it is illegal, let alone bend over and fondle it.

I think we will have all this and soon, but I hope I am wrong.

your right Squirrel, we will have this and many other stupid laws and restrictions soon, very soon. Then youll have to take every antler and get it plugged or stamped and if you have antlers in possession that are not marked, Ticket. Shed season, HELL NO. Pick up a horn a day early, Ticket. Really, think hard about trying to create new laws like this, give em an inch they will take a mile.

A lot of what you guys said is true. And a shed season probably isn't the best idea. I guess to each their own. One thing that does bother me is going into a good spot I grew up looking for antlers and coming across atv tracks where they shouldn't be. Every year I see more and more atv's making trails where they shouldn't be. I guess I was a little pissed to see a unknown spot I antler hunted since I could drive, being pounded as hard as it has been these last few years. I guess it's time to find a new honey hole. Any one have any good spots they want to share ;)

I think this a tough issue and I agree a lot with those who oppose more laws. I'm just looking at it from the standpoint of how the sport has grown to be so popular. I hear kids in school at church that talk about hunting sheds all the time. I haven't been out watching deer once this winter where I haven't seen someone out walking and spooking the deer out of the meadow they just fed into. Our deer herds are a natural resource that are not doing that good as you all know. Does it not seem logical to give them a break for a few months? To do something? I think a lot of people think "its just me out here walking around, I'm not the one causing the harm". I've been shed hunting for a decade now and my eyes have been opened the last few years. Its not just my favorite spots. Its everywhere I go. It sucks but something has to give. Hopefully its not the deer!

I would pay for a shed tag if i thought the money would go to help the heards and to help stop poaching but it wouldnt. The extra fees would get eaten up in burearacy.

we all must think to the future, we let people build houses on south faceing slopes right to the base af a canyon thats been winter groungs for deer and elk for centuries. and then cry when we see the animals stuck in deep snow and winter kill.

Let all start with the little things like if were out early and you see your pushing a herd of does then back off and back track we have all found em ten steps from our boot tracks and wounder how me missed em.

so pick up the cans from your thirty pack and be a sportsman.

i am 100% against any law keeping me from using public land at my leasure yes im with you on wait till they drop but your talking about leting the goverment control when we can use public land thats a give me !!!

It's clear dragonshed doesn't care he said " deer will adapt or die" that seems to be the mentality of the up and coming shed hunters these days.

Aaron, I admit "adapt or die" might not have been the best choice of words, but If it was a choice between shed hunting for a weekend and possibly kicking a few deer around, or not going, you know damn well which one I would pick, and which one you would pick also. I hate shed hunting in snow, just won't do it, not because I'm worried about kicking deer around, but because it's not fun, or smart. I know you were not thrilled to see your honey hole all tracked up before all the deer have shed, but hey, we've all been there. There is still sheds to be found there I'm sure. The days of pulling 20 brown deer antlers in a day are gone for most of us but you can still find plenty of bones if you stay positive and put some miles on. The majority of guys who want a shed season are just pissed that they are getting beat to their spots!!! I know because I feel the same way! That is just not a good enough reason to want to regulate your public lands even more! You can't regulate stupid, no matter how many laws you pass. I get as pissed as the next guy when I read or overhear somebody saying that they saw a bunch of deer or elk and followed them for aways trying to get their antlers to fall off. Those guys are not bright, they obviously don't understand the biology of why antlers fall off when they do. February is a perfectly good time to look for sheds in some parts of the west, where I shed hunt there is no snow right now and hasn't been for weeks! So please aaron, let me shed hunt in peace.

But what would I know, I'm just a newbie shed hunter who runs wild on public land roping and harassing deer grabbing sheds even before they hit the ground.

enjoy some deer wrangling findings!

Then over here west of Utah, we have guys like me. I have been hiking all over in pretty thick cover where there are few deer and fewer people...just hoping actually to find some of last years (most are still on the deer). There is already a large camp with ATV's out at one of the springs...guys are over 100 miles or more from home. I showed them my one dink "whitey four point"...looked in their truck bed, probably 40 + antlers there!Amazed to find they're from St. George or Cedar City and come here EVERY year. Just the way it is...

dragonshed, people like you are the reason their will be a shed season, ,the majority of people who shed hunt need some rules, your way of thinking proves that.[adapt or die. ] shows how you care about wildlife'.,,,,what a looser,,,,,

The only reason I'm getting beat to my spots is because I wait til the deer move out of there. I'm just gonna start taking my video camera when I go out to drive the roads. I see anyone on a four wheeler off of the trail and I'll do my best to get fined. NVPete turn in those guys riding their atv's out in the brush.

that cuts deep elkun, real deep:) Man maybe I should stick to looking at pictures of women on the internet. This internet chatroom thing can be rough. I've been lurking on this forum for awhile and don't usually post anything, but any post where people are promoting more regulations, laws and fees, I can't help myself.

elkun, I do care about wildlife, In fact on most deer hunts I would rather forget my gun than my spotting scope, I enjoy just watching sometimes in god's great outdoors. I just don't put deer ahead of people, or idolize them. It's fine to get serious about something you love and enjoy, but please stop with the putdowns and judgments.

NVpete has got it right, if you don't want to compete with the gangs of retards you have to sacrifice numbers, The area I find most of my numbers is a blm wilderness study area, no atvs, and that is worth it's weight in gold. There are plenty of places like that out there, wilderness areas, rocky canyon country, road closure areas,(but still allow foot traffic) if you are sick of finding boot tracks, or atv tracks, don't shed hunt in those areas, find somewhere new!

I suppose now there will be some name calling rebuttal telling me how big a looser I am. That's fine, I'm starting to figure out that's how these forums work.

I have been a shed hunter since I was old enough to walk. I picked up antlers my dad had spotted and told me to "walk over there and look" I have been picking sheds since I was 4 and found my personal first at 5. This was over twenty years ago. A lot has changed since then. Given I have done it my entire life I have been able to personally adapt to a few ethical lessons. Shed hunting started getting popular around 2006. Now it seems every shed hunter I talk to has only been collecting within the past 5 years. These are people who don't quite understand the full meaning behind don't push deer around. To all those who have been shed hunting before it was popular, you can't tell me at some point in your shed hunting that you have never pushed up a one antlered buck to try and get him to shed. I learned a valuable lesson at 13 that pushing deer around to get them to shed does not good. For one they don't shed until they are completely ready. For example, I watched a deer this year lock up with another buck and push around for a bit, if he were ready to shed the pressure would have popped them off right? No,wrong. Less than an hour later this deer simply wiggled his head and both antlers came off at the same time. I tried pushing deer for years to get them to shed with no avail. Until one year at 13 I pushed too hard and found the buck I wanted the antlers to so bad dead for no reason other than starvation. It was a hard lesson learned. Besides the fact that when you push deer around your chances of finding sets diminishes drastically! There are ways to shed hunt without disturbing deer. At this point I have been able to pick up 17 browns and only one of them is a single with no chasing and only minor accidental bump ins with deer that move. If I ever walk into deer I will stop hiking. Stand still and watch them. Most of the time when doing this the deer will obviously trot about 50 yards and stop and stare. Stay still. Don't move but as well don't stare at them. Let them do there thing chances are they will either go back to feeding or walk away slowly. If they don't walk away and they stay there your just going to have to leave and come back another time. Shed laws only encourage people who find it as an easy take. Trust me, in my younger days that was me. Trying to cheat the system wherever I could in closed areas or private lands. It's just not worth it.
There is a solution I have found very productive. I talk to every shed hunter I run into. Wether parked looking from there truck or out on the hills. In a polite conversation i inform them chasing deer or pushing deer is harassment of wildlife. I inform them that they need their shed permit and encourage them to spread the word that fish and game do get calls about people chasing or pushing deer and they do write tickets to those who are harassing wildlife. Everybody wants a fair chase. You can't get them all and if someone else finds some sheds congratulate them! Regardless of it being almost an obsession to be they are just bones in the end. I have noticed in areas where I have communicated with any shed hunter I see I have gained friends and spread mutual care for the wildlife. When the inconsiderate have the Dwr called on them for being unethical and they get a ticket it's a good reminder that shed hunters are doing there part in being ethical.
Shed seasons do no good. Helping to educate those who are new to the sport can ring in better results

I'm glad you learned your lesson. You sounds like a good guy :)

I just can't believe all those guys that have no ethics. Every year there are a bunch of idiots that rape that Millville face WMA, and a ton more that go out and stash sheds on the Island. Why can't people just follow the rules? Does jumping some guys fence to get sheds on private property, stashing sheds, or getting them early, really make people feel special and good inside?

I wish everybody could just do it legally, but I guess some people have to cheat to make it look like they are the best shed hunters in the world.

Although I was against it from the start, it appears as though Wyoming's shed season is working. There were plenty of violations from the beginning, but a couple of high profile cases have begun to make people re-think cheating.

The fine isn't too bad, but loss of hunting privileges for a year or two seems to be working as a deterrent. Enforcement can be tough, but just like with poaching, the public can help out with that. One guy that got busted was a regular here on MM at one time.

No matter how much you try to educate people and beg them to leave the critters alone until winter is over, there are too many that try to get the edge over everyone else.
