It's coming!!!

Foghorn

Yeah maybe, but what about the late season elk hunts that run all the way to Jan 31? Coyote, rabbit, lion hunters? Whats the difference between all that and guys out hiking for sheds? Cool set by the way.

The difference is while I am doing all those activities I can avoid the areas where the deer are hanging out. While I might disturb a few, I am not intentionally out walking through the bedding and feeding areas of the deer. There is a difference. I sat in a coyote stand one time and called while watching 3 bucks feed in the sage. During the stand one buck dropped where he needed. I made note and came back a few weeks later and no bucks deer were around so I made the trip out. The problem is people are already beaching the brush with side by sides, and walking these areas, etc. Ultimately it may not fix it all, but at some point the greed and money driving shed hunting will eventually become too much.

That's a sweet set! Don't let it get to ya if people bag on you for picking up fresh brown. The actions of a few shouldn't reflect on all of us as a whole. (Fresh blood doesn't mean he chased the deer away to pick his horn up, guys.)

Elkun, are you implying that there needs to be a shed season May 1st because by picking up sheds with blood under the burr is detrimental to the deer herd? If so, how? Sounds like a bit of jealousy to me. Not?

Looks like a naturally shed antler to me... Don't know how leaving it on the ground would help wildlife.

The quintessential Monster Muleys post...

Hornless whiner = purity re-defined, possibly surpassing the driven snow.

Kid with 2 NICE FREAKIN HORNS = spawn of satan, probably has a 666 deep in the crack of his ass.

Only thing you should get bitched at about kid is WHERE ARE THOSE BUSTED POINTS??? Go pick them up, glue them on then post him up! I,for one, will be very impressed at that point!

good set. near harker?

podini...don't know how.. that's the truth most of you don't know #####.. give our wildlife a chance to recover from winter. !!!! may 1st for antler hunting!!!

Good job man! Haha people make me laugh.. It's all jealousy! Setting up shed hunting laws is just a waste of time. The laws wouldn't stop me from shed hunting and they won't stop others. I'm all for some how stopping people from riding wheelers but that's not going to stop either. Unless they quadruple the fish and game force and basically arrest people for off roading. But that's not going to happen. So instead of dogging people for finding fresh Browns just say congrats or keep your jealous outbreaks to yourself. :)

So what if a coyote would have run out next to the deer??? Would you have shot it? That would scare the deer worse than a guy walking around in my opinion. Maybe you should quit firing your guns all over the winter range while the deer are trying to recover. LOL!

Actually the deer were 800 yards out and I did happen to shoot a tote on that stand. They never stood out of their beds. Do I bump deer at times, yes, but not on purpose and I am not out there running them, not out there kicking every square inch of thier bedding areas, etc.

I actually did kill a tote I that stand. The deer were around 800 yards out and I killed the tote at about 30. They never got out of their beds when I shot or retrieved the yote. On the flip side hunting and killing totes help deer out so while doing so I am actually trying to help out the deer as opposed to running them and trying to turn a profit!

So we're you not one of the people who was preaching how important it is to shut down the December governors tag? Yet you appear to have no problem with people out picking up horns when the deer are their weakest and the snow is getting the deepest?

So why is it jealously to want people to give the animals a break? I pick up plenty of good sheds. I am not jealous at all and they are a great set. If we all had you dumbass ideals there would be no point in any laws because we would all be idiots that that felt like we should be above it!

Hey Kid nice set keep it up Don't worry about these keyboard CRY BABIES on here preaching their DOs & DONTS Hey elks96 what did u do with that yote you shot ?? did u leave it laying in the sage wasting ?? My bet is NO you took it home skinned & fleshed & stretched it like 99% of all yote hunters & I would also bet you SOLD that pelt !! you made the comment about making a profit off those horns how do you differ ?? I hunt yotes in the winter & I will pick up any horns I see laying around whites or fresh !! I also know that some of the best places to find yotes is near these wintering grounds !! again NICE SET

Looking at the sagebrush in that picture and the level of the snow on the mountain behind it??????? I think any deer that might have been jumped out of their beds can easily travel a couple hundred yards and bed back down. Its been a great winter for animals, all that I have seen look pretty dang good. Congrats on a great set of muley sheds.

Facts Catman??? That will just confuse them, they have their agenda after all! And what about the close up of the DRY CRACKED DIRT in the background of #1 and #2? Hell they aren't even sliding in the mud...

Yes MORON (elks96) I do/did applaud the dec closing, but it had ZERO to do with disturbing wildlife on the winter range. It has EVERYTHING TO DO with shooting deer that have mastered survival techniques that stand them in good stead until somebody pays enough money up front to legally poach them after their guard is down... the key word there is legal, not poach, as I have observed your reading skills are extremely sub-par. I have advocated total elimination of the gov tag, but will applaud any restrictions there-of until I can have the whole cookie... but this has 0 to do with the topic at hand.

Which is morons claiming that yes they disturb the deer with their activities but because they do so with love in their heart it is all OK.

When you get canned from your gig for illiteracy you have a job at the dow where you can chase them for miles in a helicopter in -30 temps in 4' of snow, net 'em, hog tie 'em, measure them and sawzall their antlers off (for sale later of course) then collar them.

Then the very next day go write somebody for harassment of wildlife for stopping their truck on a county road and rolling down their window to watch deer... Hypocrisy elks... look it up, learn how to spell it too, the shoe will fit ... trust me.

Elkhun,
So you saying that you have never went shed hunting before may 1st? I have heard so much stupid crap come out of you. your never satisfied with what everyone else is doing or their accomplishments when you don't even know the facts. just sick of all the negativity towards people on here..

So then, do tell me where we draw the line? I have one spot I sit and watched this year. From this one high point I can see about 16 square miles of great winter habit sage. 2 weeks ago from my perch on a county road I counted over 200 deer and 47 were bucks. This last weekend from the same spot, I saw exactly 3 deer. Soon after I found the reason. There had been an atv across most of it and at least 3 trucks and I could see where alert 3 to 4 people had hiked it! That resulted in over 200 deer being displaced. While this winter has been easy, were are always only 1 really bad snow storm away major problems!

So do tell me where is that line? What can be done to protect wintering deer? What should be done?

Or should we just allow things to continue on the current course? Maybe we should just let it go and all the deer will be just fine?

muley 21 . don't like what I have to say.. don't read it.or is that a little over your head???

Also since it was about protecting older deer, Is it not important to protect them in the winter when they are fragile? As far spelling issues go, I have a new iPad that is giving me fits on auto correct.... yote is not a recognized word. The first time it was spelled, it would change to yore, second time it will stick, other times it changes to yotres! But it is nice to know that proper spelling and grammar also play such a role in this debate!

You make some good points! I am concerned about the profit and the motivation of so,e horn hunters! I did mention profit because when it becomes a driving factor for a recreational opportunity things usually head south. Also despite everything, coyote hunting in most cases not all is somewhat limited and managed by laws that are in place to help ensure safety, fair chase, etc. There however are not any rules or regulations specifically aimed at shed collection. There are some laws that overlap into the area but due to wording and enforce, net issues they really do not address the concerns that arise! Kind of like the same crap that occurred with the governors tags in Colorado. my question is simply where should the line be drawn? For years we have operated with almost no oversight no regulations and for the most part no need. But due to increased popularity, increased human population, decreased herd sizes, etc. While I a, certain that you and squirrel and the kid who posted all try to be cautious around the animals, there are entire groups of people who will go out in a foot of snow and push animals til their tongues are hanging out!

What I find more discouraging in this topic and when it is addressed, is that most do not think it is a problem at all and as a result we seldom if ever have the conversation that results in meaningful change!

Elk96 I see that you didn't answer my ? about what u did with the yote !!! I don't see how picking up sheds on their winter range for a profit is any different than you or I or anyone else shooting yotes for profit in the same ranges !!! In Idaho the areas I yote or horn hunt there is NOT problem with masses of people or rigs chasing the animals in fact most of the areas I pick up deer & elk horns I rarely see anyone else !! I have watched different programs on MT WY & CO opening day of shed seasons & almost every show some people Broke the law !! that is NEVER going to change this conversation is on here & other sites every SINGLE year MY suggestion is horn hunt when u think its right for you & don't worry about the ones that are always going to break the law !! It would not matter if all the F&G departments came out & said Nation wide it is ILLEGAL to pick up ANY shed antlers until JUNE 15TH there are still going to be people out in Jan Feb Mar etc etc

Elkhun it amazes me how much disrespect you have for other people, and how much of a joke you are to this site. get off your high horse and just be humble.. but I probably know that's to much to ask. its hard for those that are narcissistic like yourself. but all we can do is hope one day you will change and respect those that are around you that share the same passion for hunting. the reason I stay on this site is because I enjoy 90 % of the posts and success stories on here and I will not give up what I enjoy just because someone has to act like they know it all and are disrespectful to others.

I did not say what I did with because I can not remember! I let me lay if the hide sucks and I keep others. I agree with with your assume r on the issue, I am not against the collection antlers not against profit, I am however concerned about the tremendous growth the sport has seen and the increased issues I see on the winter ranges both here in Colorado and parts of Utah. I have seen some real crappy actions and as a result I a, concerned about the stress it places on animals and the impact it has on our struggling herds.

I will be out with my son again this weekend looking things over. we will walk a canyon or flat if there does not appear to be too many critters around, however I know that if I watch I will find an tab off in sticks driving and I will see people from trucks watching and pushing bucks around hoping the antlers will fall off...

Also I never jumped on this kid, but simply agreed with a concern for the deer and the possible pending doom of regulations as people keep doing stupid crap!

m arey 21.I don't respect any one that does not respect our wild life!! if its hunting sheds to early or paying big bucks to kill a deer or elk and thinking your a big time hunter!!if if you don't like it tuff. Our wildlife needs that respect . if you and some others on here cant do that !!take up golf.....

ha man I love golf! but a lot of golf courses provide some pretty good feed for mule deer where I live. So I get to do two things that I love at the same time! Golfing is helping provide good nourishment for those deer and taking my anger out on a golf ball. now that's a fact elkhun! but also if you think of it this way if im going golfing im disturbing all those deer on the golf course while im driving around my golf cart all over the place... anything that comes out of you elkhun just makes you even more of a hypocrite..

Awesome set of antlers! Good for you.
