Beating A Dead Horse

Hey fellers. I love the outdoors as much as the next guy and that's why I respect it. I've always heard on hear by some of the MM faithful about those dang quads looking for horn but I really didn't think it was as bad as I witnessed. Me and my family like to go out and hike and ride horses out in the wilderness as much as possible, if we happen to find a shed "awesome" but we like to enjoy the peace and quiet. This year though I thought I would get serious about this shed hunting thing and take the horses out and put some miles on the boots as well. I was disgusted to see regardless of the terrain, there were fourwheeler tracks on every finger, wash, hillside and gully that was accessible. When I see this it makes me think hell yeah please bring on more wilderness acts and shut all the roads down cause I know I'll work for it as most won't. And every year it seems as if a new trail pops up to a honey hole that use to take a couple of hours to hike in. If you want to have our land even more restricted just keep it up. I am for more enforcement out in the hills but we all know this is just not possible. I love hunting, fishing, hiking and scouting just as much as anyone but as popular as this is becoming. Trust me things will change and for the worse. Sorry for beating a dead horse but maybe it'll get through to some of the knuckle heads. Then again probably won't.

LAST EDITED ON May-04-15 AT 07:23PM (MST)[p]It's getting worse and worse every year. And it's sickening. Like you said, it's only going to bring about more regulations and those of us that are ethical and responsible are the ones that are going to pay.

This year I hiked to one of the spots that I like to look. It's a pretty tough, steep hike with two ways in. One is shorter, but steep (about 1,500' climb) the other is more gradual but longer. I've never seen anyone in there before but plenty of sign so I know other people are in there, no big deal, I usually find a few anyways. When I get to the top there's a guy up there glassing with his daughter. I was friendly and said that he was there first so I would leave it to him and work my way the opposite direction. He's real coy but did tell me he came in the other way. As I left him I though, "wow that's cool, I'm impressed he hiked all this way in with his daughter". Then I get a little higher and hear an ATV down below. I grab my binoculars and there he is riding all over hell, daughter on the back. Mind you, there is NO ATV trail anywhere near this area. In fact there is a fence going across the one spot where you can get an ATV and where I've seen tracks. Even then I've never seen any @$$h_le this brave to come across the the fence and this far back. I'm not saying he cut the fence or pushed it over (he may have), but it's pretty obvious when you come across what you're doing. I was about as pissed off as I could get. And to think I was just talking to the guy being friendly. To make matters worse I know for a fact that he and his whole camp are from "out of town" (SLC to be specific - he told me so).

I seriously am thinking about posting signs where I know people ride off the trail that read something like, "WARNING LAZY ASSES, IF I COME ACROSS AN ATV IN THIS AREA, I WILL PULL ALL 4 VALVE STEMS AND YOU WILL BE WALKING BACK - STAY ON THE DESIGNATED TRAILS!!!

Would I actually do it? I don't know, try me I guess. At the very least I do have a very nice camera with a great telephoto lens. I'll take some pictures along with the camps and license plates and talk to the DOW officers, although that probably won't do much. Lastly I know a few of these camps by now. I am also considering writing off next season just to closely shadow these guys. How annoying would that be? Some jerk like me following right on your ass all day, especially if you're planning on going where you know you shouldn't. If I could get some helpers we might be able to just send them home early.

OK rant over. Sorry, I have to once a year - sadly it's about the only time I get motivated enough to post anything. Good luck all the ethical ones out there. To the others, well...

P.S. I do know of one instance where someone put a .50 cal. muzzleloader ball through an ATV's engine that was found way off the trail. It can happen/has happened, just saying'...

I feel ya Jack, nothing worse than trying to give a guy a tune up when he wont get off the machine.

wait till they put a season in nv! then you go out on opening and you see wheeler tracks and boots tracks all over with no sheds to be found. then you will be double pissed!
hornkiller.jpg

Making it a wilderness area does not help either. tracks of a motorbike drove right between 2 wilderness signs the other day and all over the wilderness. More laws are coming, and they are just going to hurt the honest guy, and the guys that are breaking the law now, will get even more antlers.

It sure is getting bad. Its progressively gotten worse and worse over the last several years. This is probably what the Utah guys have been ranting and raving about for ten years.
I'm becoming a fan of the famous High Country Tune UP. fatrooster.

Howdy Fat Banty!

Somebody Best Offer the HCTU!

A lot of people out of Work here in the NE Part of the State & They have Pounded everything with Wheelers & a few Trucks!

Think the DWR or USFS can catch any of them?

LAST EDITED ON May-15-15 AT 10:31AM (MST)[p]And was there any damage permanent to the landscape I highly doubt it. Your just pissed cause someone else was there first. I've been a part of many habitat restorations etc. I know sage brush is not as sensitive as you guys think. I've disc sagebrush I've spiked it and I've brush cut It It grows back and if you don't take every green blade of of it it will grow right back. Alsoeven if it did kill some sage that might be a good thing it's way over abundant and overgrown in most places. Kill a little sage and let some grass and forbes grow. I don't buy the bs about killing grass just driving a 4 wheeler over it either. Because I have seen many seed picking operations that drive tractors and seed puckers over everything and it does no harm to the vegetation the grass still grows every year and the sage brush is still there. So if a tractor isn't causing degradation I know a 4 wheeler is not! So instead of whining about it post some pics if alll the damage you guys claim.
People have been doing it for years and the grass and brush is still there. ShowMe all the bald areas that atvs and tractors caused! I bet you can't! And don't show me a damn atv trail. That is small amount of habitat lost. Just like you may enjoy hiking someone elseMay enjoy the wind in their face as they explore.

Post of the pics of all this habitat degradation! Do
Me a favor and take a pic of a spot that you think is damaged then return the next year and see if it is completely ruined.

1 acre is 43560 sq ft. A 4 wheeler trail is what 4-5 ft wide less on infrequently used ones. So that is equivalent to about 2-3 miles of 4
Wheeler trails. A square mile worth of 4 wheeler trails is 1600 miles of w wheeler trails How many miles of 4
Wheeler trails are In utah? Let's say 16000 miles I have no clue but 16000 is a lot of miles. That is the equivalent of 6400
Acres. There is over 22
Million acres of blm in utah. 6400 acres is hardly anything in that scheme. So I think atv riders have every right to have some
Trails for there enjoyment too.

Wilderness areas suck! Becareful what you wish for

So you're condoning, riding off designed trails, even cutting fences ...etc.? And your reasoning is that the vegetation will grow back!!?? I give up, I really just give up (face in palm). I need to just stay off these boards, they only confirm my lack of faith in others out there and the utter ignorance that is rampant all over our outdoors.

Wow!

The OX is the exact reason why we have these issues. Some people do not get it and probably never will. Yes habitat is an issue and while a single ATV may not seem like a big deal there are literally thousands of ATVs on public lands every weekend. If all of them took the same stupid stance as mentioned above then habitat would be the least of our concerns.

It is the selfish money driven crap attitudes that refuse to look at the big picture who will cause the biggest issues. I no longer have the pics, but I could show you where a single ATV rider too a wallow and filled it with rock just to drive up the wash. It literally is the only elk wallow for nearly 5 miles and it was ruined some some jack wagon who it too lazy to earn anything could ride up a canyon they had o business being in... I spent 2 day trying to get all the rocks out of that wallow, since that year I have not has an animal wallow in that hole... As far people wanting the wind in their face, like you mentioned there are thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of established roads and trails for you to use and feel the wind on your face. So use it otherwise you will make people who might support your recreational choice and make them an anti. In addition to habitat concerns there is erosion concerns and other wildlife that are effected too.

Sorry but the atvs need to stay on the roads and established trails. If they do not then we will all loose access. While I support motorized recreation probably more than most, I also realize that there needs to boundaries and we need to follow the rules.

LAST EDITED ON May-21-15 AT 04:26PM (MST)[p]He isn't pissed because someone was there first, he is pissed because the guy didn't lawfully earn the right to be there first. There is a big difference. Habitat destruction aside, it isn't private property and you don't have the legal right to ride any darn place you like. It is really about the price of your personal integrity. Some people justify selling out at a lower price than others.
