This is khloe my 9 month old German shorthair pup. She's doing great on deer sheds and small elk sheds. She gets discouraged on the bigger elk sheds, has anyone else had this problem? Any solutions?

Yes my lab took a while to used to an elk shed. The biggest thing is to be patient with them 9 months is still a young pup slowly work your way up to a 6 point bull. If you have a spike elk antler that would be great get him used to the differance in mass between an elk antler and a deer. That being said my 85lb lab gets more excited now as the antlers get bigger he is 15 months old

Thanks for the info. She'll probably only get to be 45 pounds at the most but it will be interesting to see how she deals with the elk horns as she gets older. She's taught herself more than I've ever taught her anyways :)

She will get it my brute of a dog is definitely bigger then I thought he was gonna be and actually he is at 75lbs probably about as big he is gonna be. But he is a shed machine and until about 11 months he was having trouble with big 6 point bull sheds. Keep working with her she will get it she is a good looking pup.

Don't sweat it yet just work with her on the basics. Besides how many 12 pound six point antlers do you really intend on finding???

I remember one of my dog's first big elk he came growling up the hill and it was getting all tangled in sage his tongue got pinched and there was blood squirting everywhere... He was so proud, I may have been just a bit also. I was loading it up and looked around and here he came with the mate from down there too, with even more growling and blood.

He died on August 12th. Enjoy your dog the memories will last a lifetime and the antlers will all be "huge".

That's awesome squirrel, you gotta love hunting dogs! this is just the first shed dog I've ever trained so I didn't know if there was something I needed to be doing different. I'm more excited just to see her work and hopefully succeed than I am to actually find any horns for myself!

Haha I PLAN on finding at least 50... :)

Better wording would have been: Over the last five years how many 12# 6pts have you AVERAGED... and it doesn't count to soak them in the irrigation ditch for 3 days before the antler buyer shows up either!

Not that I would ever do that... Gary...

Squirrel, I don't usually post on this Shed Forum but i drop in once in awhile to see what's going on. I remember well how you used to "take your Dog out for a walk", always thought those pic's of your Dog and those Monster Bucks that you must live by, were some of the better posts in these pages. I'm really sorry to hear that you lost your Buddy! I know how it goes, it's a tough one!

Thanks Sage, he was a great dog and we had a great 12 years together. He found me hundreds of antlers.

I thought people would just enjoy looking at live deer pics but I was WRONG... the death threats to me and the dogs just got to be too much trouble, then the MRS started getting emails of pictures of our house sent to her... (she was worried they would miss me and hit a dog)

The tough guys here at MM are a very special crowd, we'll just leave it at that. I stay in the house and cry a lot, mostly in the basement...

But it has one window ;)

As stated above, just start with a small elk antler and slowly graduate to bigger antlers.
Squirrel, sorry to see that you've lost your dog.
fatrooster.

Thanks Rooster. I hope Daisy is still able to get out some?? They were about the same age... topaz was Ok for deer last year but I didn't even go for elk as he couldn't have gone in that rough of country, without him it just wasn't a priority, first time in 25 yrs it wasn't a priority... left a big hole.
