How much per pound?

I have been selling antlers for about a year now and I don't go by any proper system of deciding the value of an antler but rather by about how much I think it should be. I have decided that I am going to sale by pounds now. So, for you guys that sale antlers, how much per pound for a fresh brown mule deer antler or a fresh brown elk antler? Also how much per pound for a hard white? If you go by any method of selling I would love to hear. Thanks.

I buy antlers and find that people really put value in the memories attached to the antler. When I buy an antler, I can cut it up and resell it in a heartbeat, when it comes to cutting up an antler I have found or I found with my kids, its alot harder! I would say get what you can for your antlers but be realistic, if you're ready to sell, you have to look at them as a piece of bone and go from there. I'm paying like $4-$10 per pound($12 for the best brown) but that is the going rate here (Oregon) other places you may get more (up to $15) or less ($10) but I wouldn't take less than $10 for brown elk with the current demand. Deer prices are less than elk in places. White can be very subjective, people will grade with two grades (hard white and chalk) or 3 grades (#2, #3 and chalk) or even more grades and it is all a matter of opinion. It is tough to be an antler buyer at times, its all a judgement call, just find a guy who is honest (that is sometimes tricky, some antler buyers can be sleazy) and will do his best to give you a fair shake. Good luck!

Prices change weekly, but I wouldn't sell a pound to a buyer who grades brown antler. If he reduces the price for chipped points or broken tines on brown bone, look elsewhere. Most of the buyers sell to an exporter who just grinds them up anyway. I've been loyal to my buyer and in return have always got the best price per poundage.

I agree with Brow-tine!

I sell to a single buyer who makes his own chandeliers/lamps and he doesn't pick over the antlers. They are either A-brownie's, B-faded (not dry-cracked) or C-white and has always given me higher than current price for them by the pound.

And I don't nit-pick about which get sorted into what pile either. I'll say truth is price does fluctuate year to year and by type (elk/deer) according to what's in demand.

So check the internet for current and judge from there.
