Shed Dogs

So couple of questions. First off is there better breeds then others to turn into shed hunting dogs. I have a boarder collie, would he learn it. At what age is to old for a dog to learn this trade.

Also how do you go about teaching a dog to find sheds. Do you just play fetch with sheds rather then balls.

He is a smart dog and I want to teach him something cool and can't really think of anything cooler to teach him then finding sheds.

Thanks guys.

Pugs are the best I have ever seen. They have a nose for it. When they find one, their reaction is unmistakable. :)
You have to start with them young.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-15-16 AT 04:14AM (MST)[p]Yes some breeds are better then others. Labradors are great at it naturally they want to retrieve. But other breeds of dogs are good to. I have a buddy who's German Shepard does pretty well very strong nose. But it seams natural for a lab

As far as training they don't have to be pups I have trained 5 year old dogs to pick up on it just as well

Thanks, doesn't hurt for me to give it try. I just don't know where to start. Do I just play fetch with an antler first then move on to hide and seek. That was the plan I was going to shot for unless someone tells me otherwise.

Make sure you condition your dog every year before season starts. Took my dog out a few years ago and she tore her pads up really bad took weeks to get her feeling better. I ended up packing her back to the truck that day. Took her out this year too she's conditioned but she broke her whole dew claw off so she's out of commission for a few weeks.

As far as training I just played fetch with her and we had a big field by our house and would go hide antlers then take her out to find them. Give them lots of praise when they do find one and always end training on a good note. Make training short too only 10 to 15 minutes a day.

You gotta keep them doin it all year, my dog use to be good but we haven't made it out much the last few years and she's struggling this year. But it's still nice to have a hiking partner.
