That last photo looks as if someone intentionally placed the dead cedar over the head/neck when it was fresh to keep the preds. from hauling it away...

it was a lion kill, the bull hooked that tree and fell off a ledge with it. you could see where they were fighting on top of the ledge and the tree was up rooted. when i went back to take the head to the fish and game the lion was on the kill.
