I lucked out and drew a 34A December 14-31 buck tag. I'm new to the coues hunts and I've talked to a lot of guys and it sounds like you glass A LOT and spot and stalk. I'm not extremely concerned about finding them but I'm not real solid on field judging.

Any reference points (ie. ear lengths, body size etc.) or videos, websites, magazines etc. with field photos so I can get more comfortable on selection?

I appreciate any feedback. Good luck this year!

I also tried ordering the Extreme Coues deer video from the ad bar on the left of the forums page but had trouble with the transaction. Can I get it at Sportsmen's?

Thanks!

Have you tried coueswhitetail.com? Lots of coues info over there. Just search and you will get TONS of it.

Thanks! That's excactly what I needed. Cool site. I thought that only muleys had fanatics? j/k

You should be more worried about finding them than scoring them. They are extremely difficult to glass up and move close enough to get a solid score. Glassing on high points is the key and you may have to look for miles. Scoring is not to tough either as long as you have the optics to do so. Look over lots of bucks on coueswhitetail.com in their picture forum and you can get some measurements to better yourself at judging. If you find a buck in the 90's and it's your first coues hunt shoot it. I know 34A holds some of the largest coues there are but it's tough to find deer over 100. Good luck.

Eartip to eartip is about 14". Eye corner to nose tip is about 5 1/2 to 6" Ear length is about 6" This should help judging tine length and inside spread.

I have the December 34A tag also. First coues in that unit as I have usually hunted 29 and 36 before.

Good luck on your hunt.

There is a book by Duwane Adams that is sold on coueswhitetail.com It has a scoring system in it that helps out in field judging. There is also alot of pictures that have scores that will help. I think the book is 20.00 so it is affordable and actually has unit descriptions and comments as well. The best way for me was to look at alot of heads/scores and use them as reference...... Thanks, Allen Taylor......
