After years a contemplating I finally put in for the border unit 35a even after all the horror stories I've heard about illegal immigrant problems.

Is there anyone out there that would like to share their experiences with hunting border units good or bad? What precautions should be use when hunting on the border compared to the other units? I just want to be as prepared as possible to help prevent any problems that might occur.

In the last 3 years, I have slept south of Parker Canyon in 35A for about 2 weeks total during the mearns quail seasons. I have not seen an illegal, although some walked around camp one night. Trash seen has been minimal. Go enjoy your hunt, if drawn.

Hunter X,

I've hiked the Huachucas and they are full of illegals. They cross in the dead of night and usually stick to the mountain passes. With that said, you will be getting into the hills early in the a.m. so move quietly, but deliberately. They also know when the hunt is going on and you will be carrying a high powered rifle... If you see some with backpacks make EVERY effort to avoid them. They will usually scatter like in every direction. I've spent hundreds of hours in the border hunt units and not had problems, but it serves to be viligant at all times. You have made the choice and as RR said enjoy the hunt, this is still the United States of America.

Used to hunt 35B a lot, and lately I have been hunting 36A. I usually see them but never had a problem. Just camp near others and keep your belongings as secure as possible. Enjoy your hunt. 35A is beautiful country.

I've been hunting 36a for about 15 years now. You will see tracks in 35a and maybe see some illegals, but as has already been said they will avoid you unless they need water. I just leave some water out atcamp and have handed out bottles of water. The burlap backpack boys are the ones you need to stay away from. They are the ones carrying drugs. They are also usually armed.

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like I should be OK now just got to wait for the draw.

I live in 35A and have been in the illegal alien (that's the correct name) catching business with the USBP for 17 years now. There are plenty of them in the Huachucas, and San Rafael Valley at all hours of the day/night. You will probably see them, or at least evidence of their passing. Stay aware and armed, and you probably won't have any trouble. Use a Club on your truck, as they would only steal it to get north or smuggle others. Also, I would recomend camping at Parker Canyon Lake, as people will be around to avoid having your coolers emptied by illegals.

IA Hunter, good to see ya on here.. I FINALLY made it out of northern MT and got back to TUS!!! Damn, its good to be back, brother! That NB takes a special breed of PA for sure.

35A is my stompin grounds every weekend during Mearns. You'll see plenty of evidence, and maybe a group, but for the most part, you and your belongings will be fine.

Good info here guys.

Any word on how the muleys are in this unit during January. I plan my first attempt with a bow.

Thanks for any insight.

Its fun down there. Big Muleys roaming around in the heat of the rut, what could be better. The earlier in January the better. Rut pretty good till mid January.

Well the hunt is over and we didn't have any problems. Was a good hunt! Thanks for the replies guys.

Our camp with 3 for 5. Nothing big just a spike w/ eyeguards, 2x1, 2x2. Hopefully story and pics coming soon.
