Hello. My brother and I will be heading to AZ next Jan for our 1st coues hunt. We have never been to AZ, nor hunted coues deer. Hopefully some of you with more experience can help answer some of my questions.

We are in the intial stage of our planning process, but have a few units that look decent, which are 22/23/33/34. We would like to do a coues javelina combo if possible. Would you agree these are decent units, or should we continue our search? We will be flying in from IN and renting a vehicle. Should we plan on finding a place a few miles off the road, pack in and spend a week there like we would on an elk hunt or should we drive to a new place each day? We have never done this so we really have no idea.

Should we take tree stands, hunt travel areas, water holes? What is the best time in Jan to hunt coues? What is the typical weather in Jan? Any tips or help you guys might be able to provide would sure be appreciated. All archery tags in Jan are OTC right? Thanks for the help. Troy

O BOY THATS A HOLE LOT OF QUESTIONS. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT AND I HOPE YOU SHOOT A MONSTER COUES.............................

Those are some real good units to start. 23/33 i have hunted before, those units are good couse deer units. You will have to apply for the spring draw for Javalina. Archery deer in these units are all otc. Unit 33 and 37b are combined unit for archery javalina. Alot of pigs in 33/37b, 37b is mostly mule deer unit but there are areas around the unit with good couse but real rough country. I have never hunted these units with tree stands, it is mostly high desert. My advice is glass. Is the best way to hunt couse. good luck on your hunt!

The first thing I would recommend is buy the book: How to hunt Coues Deer by Duwane adams and Tony Mandiel. It's a quick easy read and FULL of answers to the questions you are asking. I'd love to answer your questions, but it would require me to write a book on it...and since better coues hunters than I have already done that...well...get the book and read it first. That would be my advise. Good luck...

Bighunter: you will be hunting the rut time which is substantially different than the upcoming August hunt. Alot of the units you have listed dont lend themselves to treestands, but if your driving out, you should bring a climbing stand. Alot of the bowhunting out here is stands and ground blinds with mineral licks as an attractant. I would suggest a map service for whichever unit you decide on because with gas prices and you being new to coues, you could spend your whole trip just figuring out the unit. Call Duwane Adams at 520-385-4995 and he provides this service......... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Come on guys, let him try to get a tree stand up in a mesquite, or a cactus. It would be a sweet picture.
