I have a turkey tag in 6b next weekend and will be scouting for my whitetail hunt later in the month. Any advice about where to hunt or how the hunting is in the area? Thanks

I never hunted AZ but can help on the turkey intel. Someone else can help on the Coues intel.

Hunt where the turkeys are is Rule 1.

In very dry SE Washington state I rarely see a turkey more than 50 yards from a river or stream. So if 6B is desert like then focus on the streams to find a turkey. The turkeys will roost in the east-facing trees that catch first sunlight along the river and will spend the day feeding on seeds and insects alongthe river. That is my experience.

Will be easier to call in a hen or poult from this year's hatch using a kee kee kee and hen yelp than to call in a gobbler. The hens and poults hang out together. The gobblers will not be with the hens and poults.

You can pattern turkeys in the fall so if you spot a group then you can return the next day and they will more than likely make the same path at about the same time. Set up on the path and wait. That is the most likely way to get a gobbler. I use a trumpet call which makes a gobbler yelp sound that can lure in a gobbler in the fall if you catch a break in the luck department.

Rule 2 is use a pop-up blind if you are waiting on turkeys to come to you. Be sure to not have opposite windows open at the same time. You want it dark inside so your movement is hidden. Get a folding chair and read a book while you wait if you want. Hunt all day since turkeys keep moving in the fall rather than hole up in the middle of the day.

Good luck.

How did you Coues hunt go?? I haven't hunted that far north, being from UT that would be a nicer drive than 32 or 33. I have also hunted 35 and 27. Killed my best buck in 27. Long drive though.

For the Coues, hunt the edges of Sycamore from Volunteer south to Casner and Black, and around to East Pocket. The recent Taylor fire near Turkey Butte opened up some area to glass. Secret Mtn and Wilson Mtn. Tough hunt. A lot is too thick to glass or real steep.

Guess I should have looked at the year on the original post.
But then, I sometimes live in the past.
