Just thought Id ask about this unit to see what I could learn. I would like to know about the pros and cons. So what are your thoughts? Oh by the way me and my wife were able to get a left over tag for this unit and we have not hunted it before. Thanks quest.

I hunted this unit 3 years ago on a junior hunt for my son. My general opinion was that there are way too many tags given out for the unit, it was crawling with people. That being said, how we handled this was to get up 1/2 earlier than planned, hike back in 1/2 farther than originally planned and this kept the people off us. We saw alot of deer both muleys and coues. We accessed the unit on Arivica road from HWY 19. It is a pretty good sized unit, so I would plan on a couple scouting trips to pin down where you want to hunt from......... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Allen, just curious did you run across any illegal aliens while out hunting. Did your son get his buck? Our hunt is Nov. I'm little worried about the weather. Was it hot when you hunted? What was your overall experience in rating this hunt, good hunt, ok hunt....?

What season is your leftover tag for??

I got a leftover for the late Nov. season in 36b. Like last year, we'll stay at the RV park in Arivaca.

Regardless of where you hunt down there, you'll likely at least SEE illegals. Last year on the way out, a couple were actually hitch-hiking on the Arivaca Rd., less than a mile from the border patrol check-point on that road!

When we stopped at the check-point I told the the BP agent about them, and he said his partner had just gone to check. Yet we hadn't seen any vehicle pass us in the opposite direction.

How To Hunt Coues Deer

Tony we got the early NOV hunt. I have your book. How does that hunt (unit 36a) hold up now since you wrote your book? Can you tell me what the weather will be early NOV, hot, mild? Thanks for the heads up on illegals.

My experience has been with hunting the late October hunt twice and the early November hunt once. During both late October hunts it was extremely hot and I cut my hunt short both times. The early November hunt was better and saw quite a few deer but nothing I wanted to tag. The year I had the November hunt it was warmer than normal and the October hunt was cold. The hunters during the October hunt had a lot of success. One thing is for sure you cannot predict the weather. Personally for me I will never hunt any October hunts in S/Az unless it's a junior hunt with my kids because you can almost guarantee the weather will be hot. The lower hills on the south end will have a lot of hunters and the higher ones you can get away from people. It's not easy though. That area is full of loose rock, cacti, thorn bushes, illegals, and the big scary looking spiders that hang out between trees. Those of you who have hunted down there know exactly what I'm talking about. Nothing like walking between mesquites in the early morning light and having a big black spider in my face!

my exerience was early october very warm . Lots of rough contry lots of rattle snakes. And yes illegals almost every day.And moor spiders than you could shoot .And yes they are big.I had a good time so good im going back this year with wife and two boys all of us have tags.Should be even funer this time Almost forgot one JR javy tag.

Btw, everyting I found out about the unit came from the AZGFD website. In the middle of the night I followed the directions they gave on the website to the south end of the Sierritas, woke up and started hunting. Good luck.

We didn't see any snakes but my son and I saw three during a junior hunt in 33 last October. They are definitely out that time of year.

Hello Men, I've been reading your thoughts on 36a and just wanted to chime in and tell you a little about what I know to be true. I actually live in Green Valley and have hunted 36a or B for the last 10 yrs for coues, muleys, and javalina.

A few answers to your questions are , Yes its always HOT, doesnt matter what time of the yr. it is. Even in Jan and Feb you start out in the morning before daylight wearing a nice jacket and layers of warm clothes and by the time the sun comes up and you've walked a ways the coat and the layers start coming off. Unless of course you hit it lucky and a freak rain cloud happens to blow over the spot your standing in .

Yes there are always snakes, spiders, and flies.
Yes there are lenty of illegals, so dont leave anything out at your camp that you dont want to lose. It might help if you have a dog that can be left there to guard things.

Yes there are is game, but there are a lot more does than bucks and they are very wary to say the least. There are so many illegals, and others running around down here that the deer have learned to be wary of anything remotely human. So bring good optics, use them a lot and be ready to stalk your game after you spot them .

practice long range shots. you may need to take one.

Its a good area to hunt or I wouldnt have hunted it for so long but you do have to be prepared for everything all the time. If you have questions about any thing specific send me a Pm and I'll help you out.

Any up dates on unit 36a? I plan on doing some scouting down there when I get the Chance.

If you can get away this weekend, it would be a GREAT time to get to 36A. The G&F is sponsoring a couple of water/drinker projects in the unit, and they are looking for volunteers.

Gabe Paz (WM for the unit) and other G&F representatives & folks will be there. They could use the help, and it would be a great time for you to pick the brains of some of the locals and other's that are quite familiar with the unit. If you want to help, you should be able to find details on the G&F website. Else, just head south of Three Points on 286 to mile post 33, which is where the volunteer base camp will be.

I'll be there at least on Saturday, and hopefully Sunday to! ;-)

Dang stanley I'm already committed to a water project in unit 44. I'm sorry it took me awhile to get on here to read this. Thank you for the info :-(

We just got back from scouting unit 36A. I didn't know that it had open for the Couse deer hunt. There was a lot of hunters there most were out walking the unit. We ran across one lucky hunter who got his buck at first light. It was nice 3X3 with eye guards about a 70 inch buck. The weather was real cool. We also seen some mule deer. One was a 2X2 buck the rest were does. Thats my report. :) quest
