Armed Volunteers Plan to Patrol Border

Wed Mar 30, 4:14 PM ET U.S. National - AP

By ARTHUR H. ROTSTEIN, Associated Press Writer

TOMBSTONE, Ariz. - Hundreds of volunteers, some of them armed, are expected to take up positions along the Mexican border Friday and begin patrolling for illegal immigrants ? an exercise some fear could attract racist crackpots and lead to vigilante violence.

Organizers of the Minuteman Project said the civilian volunteers, many of whom were recruited over the Internet, will meet first for a rally in this one-time silver mining town, then fan out across 23 miles of the San Pedro Valley to watch the border for a month and report sightings of illegal activity to Border Patrol agents.

Minuteman field operations director Chris Simcox described the project as "the nation's largest neighborhood watch group" and said one of the goals is to make the public aware of how porous the border is.

Jim Gilchrist, a retired accountant from Aliso Viejo, Calif., who organized the project, said that some volunteers will carry handguns, which is allowed under Arizona law, but are being instructed to avoid confrontation, even if shot at.

Still, law enforcement officials and human rights advocates are worried about the potential for bloodshed.

Critics contend the project may attract anti-immigrant racists and vigilantes looking to confront illegal immigrants. At least one white supremacist group has mentioned the project on its Web site.

"They are domestic terrorists that represent a danger to the country and could promote a major border conflict that will have serious ramifications and consequences," said Armando Navarro, a University of California-Riverside political science professor and coordinator of the National Alliance for Human Rights, made up mostly of Hispanic activists.

Michael Nicley, chief of the U.S. Border Patrol's Tucson sector, said the volunteers are "not the kind of help the Border Patrol is asking for."

Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever said he fears immigrant smugglers might open fire on the volunteers.

"I wouldn't anticipate that people of that persuasion would act or react any differently to anybody, citizen or law enforcement alike, if they were confronted and felt like their cargo was in jeopardy," he said.

The project's organizers gave assurances the volunteers will be closely monitored. "If it gets to a situation where someone's life is in danger," said David Helppler, Minuteman security coordinator, "I will end the project."

Project organizers said they expect 800 to 1,000 volunteers. How many might actually show is unclear; similar efforts in the past few years flopped. One of them drew only about a half-dozen people.

On Wednesday, the Homeland Security Department announced that it is assigning 534 additional agents to the porous Arizona border to help keep out potential terrorists and illegal immigrants.

The 370-mile Arizona border is considered the most vulnerable stretch of the 2,000-mile southern border. Of the 1.1 million illegal immigrants caught by the Border Patrol last year, 51 percent crossed into the country at the Arizona border.

Some people in this town nearly 30 miles north of the Mexican border, best known as the site of the 1881 shootout at the OK Corral, are eagerly awaiting the volunteers' arrival.

Tombstone Mayor Andree De Journett thinks of the volunteers as tourists and said they could boost the local economy.

"I've met five or six of them, they haven't been too bad so far," he said, estimating that 500 extra visitors staying for a month could spend $10,000 or more locally per day.

Marilynn Slade, Tombstone's city clerk, said the more attention drawn to illegal immigration, the better.

"The vast majority of the people feel that the feds should be dealing more aggressively with the problem," she said. "There's a huge, huge cry down here."

I say let the games begin. Maybe if we start shooting some of this trash that is running loose across our border and leaving a trail of drugs and trash, the point will get across that if you want to come to this country legaly GREAT, but if you want to sneak through our desert with no respect to our country(that you want to be in so bad) well then ,you may just have to pay with your life. This s@#t needs to stop. I can tell you being a native resident of northern AZ. for 31yrs. i have seen the illeagl population skyrocketing over the last 5yrs and i ask myself almost daily when is somthing going to be done. Maybe this minuteman thing will work and maybe not but at least sombody is trying to make a difference. Good luck boys and watch you backs, it's not only the illeagles you need to watch out for it's also all the bleading hearted liberals.

Just think of the money AZ could make off this. I would pay fifty bucks a tag to go shoot illegals, well as long as I didnt have to pack em out. Hell, make it a combo tag, you can shoot two illegals and one bleeding heart liberal out protesting.

Wouldnt take long before the flow of illegals would slow and worthless liberals would just keep their mouths shut.

Also a good reason for my wife to let me buy a night vision scope.

I agree that something needs to be done about the problem in AZ, TX and NM. But resorting to murdering Men, women and children is not the way to do it.

Go ahead, buy your night vision scopes, let the games begin, when i'm standing before the almighty on judgement day, I would not want to explain to that I Killed his children because they crossed a line.

Crazy,
If someone breaks into your house, you have them arrested and ten days later they do it again. Then repeat this twenty times, eventually wouldnt you try something different.

As long as the almighty isnt an illegal, I think well be fine.

It is also probably hard for people to take a hard stance on this issue if they or their family arrived here in this fashion.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-01-05 AT 08:30AM (MST)[p]I'm as honkey redneck as they come and I live in So Cal so I experience the problem every day too. Something must be done, for sure. But threatening life in any fashion is not the right way. The life of any human being is far too precious to lose over a country line.

That's pretty funny, just because I have a hispanic name you assume my family, at one time, were illegal aliens. Now i'm assuming that your pretty young or just ignorant. My family came to what we call North America in 1583. What's your history?

Do what you have to do, we will all answer for what we do on this earth. Even if the almighty is a illegal alien.

I agree there is a huge problem with illegal aliens, and if you consider killing them as taking a stance, well my friend, so be it.

I posted this story because I was truly concerned that people, with perhaps good intentions, might cause or get into serious trouble. I understand the serious problem we have with the Arizona border. I can understand people being frustrated with the effort,or lack thereof,of our government dealing with this problem. However I do not think it is wise to send untrained people, with guns,to monitor and perhaps meet individuals, in what I expect will result in very emotional and pottentially hostile confrontations. I do not agree with the notion that we should be shooting these people. Many of them are in terrible situations and are desperately trying to improve their circumstances. I do not think their illegal efforts should be condoned but I do not think the penalty should be death for trying to escape what they honestly believe is a hopeless situation. Yes we need to do a better job of protecting our borders but I simply do not think it is a good idea to have armed untrained citizens doing it.

Your right caelk! ddy58 unless your native american you are a immigrant also we all are! what is happening here is not right but like caelk said leave it to the professionals.CM

Dang, I was just trying to liven this forum up a little. Well it worked so now I take back all my comments. How long is it until coues season opens up anyways?

This is the worst joke I have seen. Biblically speaking, you should help your neighbor and not shoot him......too radical of a joke with a serious situation.....alot of this country is spniper country and much more rugged then you guys can imagine.....Think before you type, more people watch and read than you may believe....... Thanks, Allen Taylor......
