What do you think of these new hunt dates? Seems to me as warm as it is in october ,it would make for a tough hunt.

The hunter success for both October and November coues hunts are almost the same. These hunts are only two weeks apart, so the temperature averages should not be much different, barring any cold front.
Success in these hunts will largely depend upon how well the hunter knows the area, and if he has scouted to find the pockets of bucks and learn their daily habits, and if he already atop the mountain before first light.
I think that these two early hunts in 6a and 23 will have good draw odds this year since this is the first year for these October hunts. Those lucky to draw the December tag will likely appreciate the reduced number of hunters afield.

I have seen a bunch of toads that got whacked on high 90 - low 100 degree days in the units down South at 3000-3500 feet of elevation where it really is hot in October. I have a hard time beleiving killing a deer on Aztec peak or Dutchwoman Butte in October is going to be any hotter than killing one in the Las Guijas, Baboquivaris or Cerro Colorado's down South. I personally think that with some scouting and knowledge of the unit, it may be a nice tag to have. Big coues deer can be killed out of the rut, it just takes alot more scouting or luck or both. I am not especially for these Early hunts in the middle units, I am a pro late tag guy, but these hunts are not going to be impossible if the units down South are any indicator.

It actually makes for a great hunt, because you are the first ones in the field with the critters that year. It makes for a hard day of hiking aroung in the heat though. I like the early hunts, and thats probably what I will get drawn for this year, But I would prefer the late hunt.

Also with the early hunts the chance of getting drawn is alot better. The way that I see it is that you will get to go 6 out of 7 years on october or november hunts while the guy putting in for the december hunt will go 1 or 2 times every 7 years if he is lucky. So the more time in the field the better chance of getting a good buck. And I must agree with knifeboy because the bucks aren't spooked when you are the first ones out there.

Now that the apps have been turned in, who else besides me put 6a and/or 23 October in as a choice? I put them as #4&5 choices.
Since this is the first year, I still think that odds will be great, considering some did not know of this addition. The downside is to those who put in for the December hunt, as permit numbers were cut in half.

I put in for the Detested Carp for first choice and went with some early hunts in 36b hoping to draw. I get tired of never having a tag so I went with the early hunts and hope I draw this year........ Thanks, Allen Taylor......

The October hunt is a great hunt. If you can deal with the heat it should be a slam dunk for a coues. I still love the Dec. hunt just because you can chase them in the rut. But the Oct. hunt is a lot of fun too.

Hey Allen,
Its been a while since you got drawn hasnt it? How many bonus points do you have for this year? Good luck, we are all gonna need it. Like I have always said, I would rather be lucky than good.

I have 4 bonus points for deer......hope to draw something in AZ but if not, I am working on a Colorado landowner voucher that will at least give me a tag with the chance of killing a monster......Hope everyone is LUCKY in the draw.............. Allen Taylor......

Allen,

Your 4 points should at least be good for an early, October coues tag. Really though, hope you get a detested carp tag north of the river. That was my first choice also. Did you also put in for primo tags in other western states?
