Well, this year I did it. I am turning my sights toward hunting the Ghost exclusively. I was fortunate to draw a Jan Coues bow hunt this year in SW NM and was wondering what techniques everyone uses in the rut? Let me know what ya'll do! I know that Cousie hunters are a secretive bunch (hopefully I will fall into that catagory in a few years!) so just general information will do just fine. Thanks for any and all info.
Jeff

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, weapon in one hand, calls in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

Jeff, there is a really ugly guy on here called Crazyaboutcoues who lives right around you in NM. He has bowhunted each year I think for coues and should be able to help you out. Hope you stick one this year.... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Bura,
Thanks for the reply.
I know about CRAZY!! Shot a couple of rounds at some 3D shoots before. Haven't got the chance to pick his brain yet. Thanks,
Jeff

Myself and a couple of buddies went after some coues with our bows last year during the archery pig season. We ended-up having some fair success (no kills, but some close calls with bucks...) just getting into an area with some active deer VERY early and posting-up in some likely spots. My two buddies got on one slope for a few hours one morning that had a dozen or so does, and a couple of rutting bucks. By just posting-up & moving VERY little, they had bucks within or almost within range on a couple of occasions. Never took a shot, but they were waiting for the right opportunity.

I didn't get a rifle tag here in AZ this year, so I'll be out there after muleys & coues with my bow this year for sure! ;-)

Have fun!

We've used a couple of techniques with good success.

First, and my favorite, tons of pre season scouting and finding a saddle that the deer are using to go from point A to point B. Set up a treestand or ground blind about 25 to 30 yards from where you think the deer will be coming from. Pay very close attention to prodominate wind conditions. These guys can smell you a mile away even with all the handy dandy scent locks.

Second, water, water, water, set a ground blind or treestand with the same considerations as the saddle. Remember to set your treestand up as high as possible. These little guys can see movement like nobodies business ;). Also, when you take your shot from the treestand, aim lower than what you range. I usually shoot five yards less. Depending on the terrain. Best time to sit water is from 11:00am to 3:00 pm.

Third, salt licks or mineral licks. If you can find a place where a rancher has set up salt licks, and they have been there for years, you have just found a gold mine my friend.

Fourth, scrape hunting, try to find a scrape line and sit it early in the morning and late in the evening. What I usually do is carry a small fold up stool and set it up where I can use a tree as a back rest. Set up about 25 to 30 yards from the scrape. You really have to make sure that you as little amount of movement as possible. Coues deer are ALWAYS in alert mode. So you need to be in ALERT mode things can happen very quick. Always have your bow ready and in a position where you can take a shot with little movement.

Coues deer do react to doe bleets and grunts. And some lite rattleing. I use the "can" made by Primos for my doe bleets. I also use a Coues deer Grunt made by an outfit from AZ I forget the name. But it does sound different from the other grunt calls.

Good Luck on your hunt Jeff. I hope I was able to assist :).

My Technique???? I follow Tommy around and wait for him to push deer to me... That or I fall asleep in a pile of pine needles... They will walk right up on you.. NO JOKE.. and yes I missed..

Thanks guys for all the info. I did purchase a tree stand this year, and have started scouting. Thanks Tommy for all the great advise, I really appreciate it! Heard you drew the cream of the crop for whitetails. Have you seen the post named "Trying something"? It has a pic of a skull I found in the burros this spring. Good luck to you guys as well, I am totally stoked about January! Gotta get through September bulls first though.
Thanks,
Jeff
