Are there any coues big buck contests going yet?? Anyone interested in getting something going?? Any ideas??

Tell you what, I would be interested in it. This will be my first year hunting them so I could probably win the most mistakes made contest :)!!! Don't have any ideas, maybe just post pics with an official score sheet or something? It will be interesting to see what happens.
Jeff

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, weapon in one hand, calls in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

I say lets do it on this forum just informally amongst anyone who wants to participate. You guys hash out any details, rules, etc........and unless Brian (guy that owns the site) doesnt like what we are doing, then we can have some fun showing the pictures and stories from those who were drawn this year and those that go to mexico. Maybe we have a couple ways for each and everyone to get a prize or praise for their buck. As an example we could have seperate big bucks for NM, AZ & Mexico. We could have top prizes for typical and non-typical in each state etc etc........lets have some fun........... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Ok, you guys have a contest. Post your photos here in the coues forum. Maybe Bura Nut will see them all. When the hunts are over, Bura Nut can pick a winner.
I'll donate a video, T-shirt, hat, and decal. Sound good?

Bura Nut, you're a coues man, right? I don't know a darn thing about coues deer. Can you pick a winner when it's all over?

Thanks Brian!!! I'll throw in a pack of Rocky Mountain Snyper Broadheads!!

Carl

Thanks Brian: I will be the judge with help from some guys. Only caveat is if God somehow someway lets me go to Mexico for coues this season, then I get to be in the contest and not just sitting on the sidelines judging.......LOL.......Seriously, thanks for the go ahead and I will judge the contenst. Everyone here will help formulate the general contest guidelines/rules and I figure from donations we can provide some good prizes.......This will be fun............. Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Go ahead and send the prizes over to my house. I'll e-mail ya with the address!!:D:D:D
That sounds like a good idea. A little friendly competition never hurt anyone. I think it makes things a little more interesting.
Sign me up!!!

My buddy and I drew Az 36B Dec tags so we'll hopefully bring something to the competition! Mike

So is all bucks going to be in same catagory, or will they be seperated as far as NM, AZ and Mexico? Don't matter to my just thought I'd ask. Count me in as well, Jan. Unit 24 NM archery.
Jeff

It looks like we only have one prize package so far. Unless we get more donations it would seem that we might just judge them on largest gross score, one catagory?? Any other ideas?? It would be nice to have more categories but we would need some more donations!!! Lets all think about it and develop this plan as we go.

Carl

Carl, I know we will get more donations so lets see what everyone thinks about categories like Typ & non typ? State by state or overall? I was thinking everyone will chime in as to what they want......tell your buddies to sign up.......lets get some activity going here on the coues forum. I know we will come up with a tripod and some other stuff so we will have some great prizes............. Thanks, Allen Taylor......

How about a category for junior hunters?
Archery and rifle. Typical and nontypical. US and Mexico categories. Smallest buck.
Maybe we each donate a prize as a voluntary entry donation.

RR

OK guys!!! What do you have to donate??? I'll sign up my son Corey (14 years old) with a December 24b AZ. tag. I'll throw in the pool, 3 packages of Rocky Mountain Snyper, 100 grain broadheads. Should we have some kind of sign up?? I like the idea of having to donate as an entry fee. Anything you might use for hunting or hunting related, no price limit high or low??
Carl

I think the kid prize is a great idea. I personally am donating stuff. Right now I have "how to hunt coues deer" book that will be autographed by Duwane Adams to the winner. I will come up with more donations......everybody hit up who you know to get more donations and lets get alot of people signed up....... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Allen, if we get donations from places like an archery shop or gun shop will we be able to give them a plug on the site? The items they donated, company name, address and phone #. Gary

I would like to get in on this. I think AZ and NM should be one category and Mexico has its own ( Mexico bucks routinely go for >100).

I'm just a working stiff, but I could throw in a few bucks in or a gift certificate ($5.00 - $10.00). FYI I have never harvested a buck >60 inches so it will be a donation:)

So where are we going to be sending in our "entry price" to?
Jeff

If no one objects or has a deep desire to be the ramrod, I'll step forward to coordinate this contest.

Let me know.

Doug~RR

Lets let RedRabbit coordinate and figure out all the details from what everyone wants to do. GSbison, Gary I think it would be appropriate to give any donors air time on this forum. I doubt it would be a problem with Brian....... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

I agree that we should have separate categories for rifle/archery and us/mexico. I also agree that each participant should donate a prize to the winner's pool as an entry fee. Let me know how to sign up.

Doug,
It's fine with me if you take the lead on this contest. I think it's a good idea to have Arizona and New Mexico as one catagory and Old Mexico as it's own. We need to establish a sign up process. Maybe we send our donation to you and include a couple bucks so you have some money to send out the prizes. Or do we have a gathering at the end of the seasom that you need to be at to win?? How many catagories will we have? Archery, gun, non-typical, typical, juniors, seniors, Az/NM, Mexico. This many catogories could get overwelming. I think we should pair it down some. Any ideas? I'd like to see fewer catagories but will leave it up to you!!!
Carl

Carl, that is a great idea to have some dinner or get together for those who can at the end of the year like the Desert Whitetail club did. Dave Howell gets on here and he used to be the go to guy for a couple years for the club and I bet Doug/Carl can iron out the categories we have and if I convince Howell to get involved, he may have how they handled the prize issue and entry fee if any etc...and how the old whitetail club handled it, cause when there is money involved, everyone wants to kinda make sure its on the up and up.I think we have alot of good guys/gals )(once we get Predator to enter) that can trade ideas and figure out a simple/understandable/somewhat fair set of rules that keeps the contest fun, kid friendly and entertaining while we build up to the upcoming early seasons.........Doug & Carl hook up and I will try to get ahold of Dave tomorrow......... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

After discussing with Carl, CPugsie, we'll set up the Coues Buck Contest for MM members as follows:

Categories (8):
Youth (ages 10-16) - largest coues buck
Youth (ages 10-16) - smallest coues buck
Archery- Highest P&Y gross coues
US- highest gross B&C Typical frame coues
US- highest gross B&C Non-typical coues
Mexico- highest gross B&C Typical frame coues
Mexico- highest gross B&C Non-typical coues
Best field photo of you and your coues buck-
based on composition & quality, not antler size

To register for the contest, send me a personal message or E-mail by October 26. I will send a confirmation with my address in case you wish to donate a piece of hunting equipment to the prize packages. Prize donation is not required, but appreciated. Maybe a few bucks to help with shipping of the prizes to the winners will help. Prize packages, and the number of places, will depend upon the number of prizes donated.

To enter your deer, e-mail me a picture of you and your deer in the field at the kill spot, and a score sheet with the antler measurements. You can download a score sheet off the B&C web site. You, your taxidermist, or scorer friend can do the unofficial scoring. You can post the picture (stories appreciated) instead of sending it to me if you wish.

http://www.boone-crockett.org/bgRecords/ScoringYourTrophy.asp?area=bgRecords

The contest will close January 31, 2006, at the end of archery season. Pictures and score sheets must be received by Feb. 6, 2006.

Hope you all enter and have a successful coues season.

Regards,

Doug

One question, why is the P&Y not seperated into typical/non-typical categories like B&C? Also, is the archery for both US and Mexico???
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,
I didn't split the archery into typical and non-typical due to the number of anticipated archery successes. I recall most all posts were of rifle hunts. But if enough archers want to separate the divisions, we can definitely do that. Also, we figured that not many MM members went to Mexico and hunted with sticks and strings as opposed to firesticks.

Doug~RR

Sounds great to me. Like I stated in the second post, this is my first year for the ghost, and going with a bow none the less. It doesn't really matter to me, I think there should be a category for most mistakes, I'd take that one!! :) I think this is a great thing, even if there were one category, deer. Thanks for putting it together.
Jeff

I have sent everyone a PM that has expressed an interest in being entered in the contest. Check your in-boxes.

Brian L./Founder and Amanda at coueswhitetail.com have agreed to run the contest through both sites. Hopefully, we will have lots of entries and some good pictures and stories to share.

Doug~Red Rabbit

KGaines, I dont know but I cant get into the discussion forum either. I sent Amanda an email so hopefully she responds back........ Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Thanks Allen I thought it was my computer at first, but I guess nobody could get on, Amanda said she is working on it.

Rudy,

See post #25 for the contest details. I have sent you a PM. Welcome to MM.

Doug ~Red Rabbit

I like the idea, and I would gladly donate to the contest pot.
Thanks for the welcome.
I been a daily lurker from the beginning of MM, and really enjoy the website, great info.
Rudy

I would like to be counted in as well, maybe I will get lucky enough to conjure up a monster in 34A come november.

As of today, there are 37 adults entered and 8 youth hunters. Hopefully, everyone that has said anything about wanting to enter has received a PM from me. Still looking for prize donations and more contestants.

Tommy,

That would be a great prize for some lucky hunter. Thanks for the prize donation.

Doug~RR

I'll throw my dad in the contest for Mexico coues hunt in January. I saw those categories you established above, if there's enough donations will there be a second prize rewarded for each category? I'll try and think of something to donate.

Doug, I spoke with Duwane Adams and he donated two Coues Deer books, autographed to the winners. He said for the two lucky people to contact him via you after the winners are announced and he will then autograph and mail the copies out. www.arizonabiggamehunts.com He also said if his new elk book is complete by then he will donate one of those as well. Holler at me if you need more info.. Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Hey Lupe! No Corey didn't get an elk but we saw a lot of big bulls this year and were close several times. We had a great time!!! I'll send you some pics of the ones some of the guys harvested.

Dan Lee of Artist Touch Taxidermy in Dewey, AZ (928) 632-8091 has decided to donate Gift Certificates for the top buck in all categories. The youth and best photo class winners will receive discounts off a shoulder mount. The typical and non-typical class winners will each receive a $150 discount on any shoulder mount AND a $300 discount on any lifesize mount, except javelina. So if you get a nice buck and may win, plan ahead and freeze it.

Thanks Dan.

I have a question. Can a person enter more than one deer? Say one during the early archery season and then another during the January Archery season. I am just wondering. May be a dumb question but thought I would ask.

Brian

Brian,
Yes, enter as many coues you can take (legally, of course) this season before 1/31/06.

RR

RR,
Please check your PM. I would love to be in the contest. Jan. hunt in Mexico with a bow, can't wait!

ok, I'm in. I have the early coues unit 33 AZ hunt,
10/28-10/31. please send me whatever info I'll need.
M WAITE, AZ.

Just a reminder that this Wednesday, Oct 26, is the last day to register for the coues contest. So far there are 90 adults and 22 youth registered.

RR

With the Arizona and NM coues whitetail hunts starting this weekend, lets take some good field photos. Many of us have entered into the buck contest and there is a category for best photo, regardless of antler size. Even if your forky won't go into B&C, say cheese.

I recall that Eastmans Journal had an article about field photos about a year ago that talked about posing and backgrounds. Remember to watch for distracting backgrounds behind you and the antlers, wipe off any blood, hide the bullet holes, cut off the tongue if it won't stay inside, sit behind the deer, not on top, tuck the legs under, take from a low profile. Gut or field dress the deer after the picture session. Take a pic that glorifies the deer and the hunt.

RR

LAST EDITED ON Oct-26-05 AT 00:44AM (MST)[p]those are some great ideas rr thanks. I forgot about the photo contest as well as the top score. do we have to pose with our "thumbs up" like we were asked to do here at mm a year or so ago for that contest ? just curious ? I leave in less than 36 hours and I'm freaking out !!!!! daves not here man !!!!!
hee hee heee look at all the pretty colors.................
M WAITE, AZ.

Looks like we should have a winner for the archery part of the contest. A guy in Bear Mountain showed me a picture of Shane's buck that looks to score around 120" gross. That's just my guess. His net will be a lot less but WHAT A WHOPPER!!!! Hopefully he will post his buck soon.

Red Rabbit, Wondering if Mexico deadline might be extended, I don't think you can even hunt down there before December ?
Either way good job organizing this.
I just barley started thinking Coues again.
If people don't approve of that, then maybe I could sponsor one for late entries like last year.

BFE,
The contest goes thru the end of Jan. and I'd like to have entries in by Feb 6. Is anyone hunting Mexico in Feb?

RR

Doug, I sent my son's(Kristopher)score sheet and pictures to you for the contest. Just wanted to make sure you got them. Please let me know. I will also send a personal message to you. Where does he rank so far in the youth hunters?

Thanks,

Kent McClendon

To All,
I'd like to see what has been taken so far in the contest. I'm sure we're all wondering and would like to see some of the contest entries to date. I'll start a new thread titled "2005/06 Coues Buck Entries". A photo and short story would be awesome!! If you have trouble posting a photo you can email the photo and your story to me at [email protected].

I have just officially measured Shane's buck. When he gets back to town I will let him tell you how big it is.
