Hello the List:

Robert here, signing on to the Coues Forum.

I grew up in Wyoming and except for when I was in the Marine Corps spent over thirty years there. I moved to Kansas in the mid 90's because I couldn't take the winters anymore.

Been hunting these Kansas whitetails and been doing pretty good.
I've taken nine over 150", several well over 160".

I'm getting interested in Coues because it looks like I'm going to make a 'career' out of big whitetails. (I took a 340"+ 7x7 bull when I lived there, but I can't draw Wyo. Unit 7/20 for elk and don't have points in Arizona, and can't afford the various Governors permits, much less the San Carlos, so a big elk collection is out. I've killed six big Wyoming pronghorns, but the drought has really hit them hard and I can't draw Arizona and can't afford New Mexico, so a pronghorn collection, for now, seems out. Mule deer? What a joke. Sheep? I've taken a Wyoming bighorn and a 165" Dall, but can't afford the Stone, much less a Desert. I've taken a 370"+ caribou and want some more, but it's really hit and miss...) So it looks like I should expand and specialize on the various whitetails, Mexican, Canadian, Coues etc.

So here I am, a rank beginner on what I'm told is THE most difficult deer.

Be merciful.

I've been through the archives and back messages... Might I ask some questions?

Robert

robert, you are correct, these deer are tough. i suggest going to coueswhitetail.com and joining there. but, you can hunt these deer as a non resident with out applying! you can buy an over the counter archery tag and chase them! it is not THAT tough to draw a AZ tag, as long as you are not holding out for a december tag you should be ok. i have killed 3 of them, my first the largest being a nice 84", my seconds a small 3x2 with character, and my last that was this past monday, a spike. they are amazing creatures, you will stare at the same spot for 15 minutes and swear on your life there is nothing living there, then all of a sudden you will see a ear twitch and there is a deer standing there. welcom to the forym and may you knock many coues down! (of course not anywhere in my unit though!!!)

Welcome Robert . You'll see this is a great site with alot of great guys and gals here with alot of great threads . With that said , going back to your past hunts , congrats , it sounds like you experianced some great hunts and nice trophys , but as far as antelope go , don't give in just yet , you said you couldn't afford NM . Its only $202.00 for a non resident to apply , thats about as cheap as it gets to play as a non res. these days , our big game proclamations will be out in late winter. Just curious , but whats it cost for NR whitetail there in KS???NM

Ask away bud, there are some guys here that live, eat, breathe and sleep Coues deer.

Welcome aboard
