Im wondering If im reading the drawing odds for NM right? The odds on the website say I have better odds of drawing than either residents or guided nonresidents, is that right?

ismith,
It would help to know what hunt you are looking at to run the numbers. They way it works here is that 78% of licences for any particular hunt goes to residents, 12% to Non-residents who have hired an outfitter and 10% goes to non-resident who have NOT hired an outfitter. So, suppose you had a hunt that had 100 tags available. 78 of those go to residents, 12 to NR w/ outfitter and 10 to NR w/out outfitter. If 200 residents applied, 50 NR w/ outfitter and only 10 NR w/out outfitter applied then yes, the NR w/out outfitter would have a better chance than both of the other groups. Like I said, depends on the hunt and how many people applied. Is it possible, yes, how likely, I don't know. Hope this helps.

Jeff pretty much nailed it , the draw is still a true lottery , its just a matter of your app.# being spooled ....NMHUNTNUTT

How does NM do the draw. How many choices are you allowed and do they look at all of them or is it like AZ where they look at your first 2 choices and if there are no tags you get put back in for another draw and then they look at your next 3? Just curious. Thanks. CB

Here in NM you are allowed to choose 3 hunts with the option of having a 4th choice which could be any hunt within one of the 4 quarters of the state, NW, NE, SW, SE. You choose the quadrant, Game and Fish issues a licensce for a hunt that has some remaining tags. As stated above, NM goes through a true lottery system. When your application number is pulled the computer will look at your first choice. If there is tags available in that hunt then the tag is yours, if not the computer goes on to the second choice and then to the third if necessary. So, your app doesn't go back into a pool of apps after the first time it is pulled. Either you get a tag or you don't. This makes your third choice just as important as your first because trully you could have a decent hunt listed as third choice and get it! Just depends on if your number is pulled at the beginning of the draw or near the end. Hopes this helps.
