35B Early Hunt

My wife drew a tag for the 35B early hunt. She is 7 months pregnant, but still excited to hunt deer. I've been out a few times and seen deer each time, but not in places that she would be able to get set up. Any advice on good spots for glassing with not a lot of uphill involved? It seems that most of the area is thick with trees and may be tough without having other hunters scare the deer your way.

I am helping out my uncle (In-laws) on this hunt as well, your best bet with a mobility challenged hunter is to stay in the Canelo hills area or lower drainages, not as steep and brushy as the Patagonia Mountains, the deer are usually lower in their range this time of year and will move up the mountain as the weather cools and the rut approaches, hunting pressure will move them higher as well, find yourself a good saddle or lookout point between north/south and east/west slopes and glass until your eyeballs hurt. If you can, buy the latest printing of the district Forest service map it will show you many good roads and trails in the area and private land as well. This unit is relatively small compared to alot of units and with 400 hunters moving around, there will be competition in the easier to hunt spots. Success for this unit is below average as well.
Good luck to you and your wife!

Thanks for the information. I really appreciate it. We saw quite a few folks driving around last weekend. We did find some bucks, but right off the road, so I'm sure other hunters know they're there. Hopefully, we'll get lucky and someone will scare some deer our way. Good luck to you as well. Let me know how it turns out.

How did you do on your hunt with your wife. There certainly alot of people in this unit. I helped my wifes cousinf find an average 3x4 on Sunday morning. Saturday afternoon I glassed two bucks at the head of a steep canyon about 900 yards away and we went back in the next morning. The bigger of the two which I guessed between 85-90" would not feed out of the thick stuff and it was so steep with a cliff behind the oak trees that they were in we could not get closer. He settled for the smaller buck at 330 yards. We saw seven bucks in all during the three days we were there.

We didn't kill a buck. I was amazed at the amount of people. Every spot you could park a camper there were 20 people. We just hunted Saturday and Sunday. Found a couple bucks Saturday evening and tried to get closer, but scared them up and about 5 minutes later the place sounded like a war zone. 30-40 shots fired at running deer from 600+ yards. I couldn't believe it. We didn't get off the road much or hike a whole lot because my wife wasn't up for it, but found some deer here and there up above other's camps. Learned a little about the deer and the importance of glass on a tripod, so overall a good experience. Hope to draw a tag myself someday.

Too bad. I hunted with my wife when she was 7 months. You too are a brave man...

Interesting to hear about the plethora of hunters. I guess Az's new "hunter opportunity" philosophy may not be so good......

Good luck getting a tag next time!

"Interesting to hear about the plethora of hunters"

No matter what you hunt or where you hunt, the two go hand in hand. There will always be way more people near the roads than anywhere else. It has nothing to do with "more hunter opportunity." Now when you find people everywhere when you hike a ways, then there is too much "hunter opportunity".

It's Bush's fault!!!
