My hunting partner has arrowed another (he currently is the state record holder) potential state record Columbian Blacktail this archery season. Just running a tape on the antlers quickly, I tallied a gross score in the 160's and he'll net about 153". Although I'm an official measurer for CBH and P&Y I must say this is a GREEN score only and will still need to dry the complete 60 days. The animal will also need to be panel measured for CBH before acceptance. But still, it looks like he'll beat his old record by a couple of inches. I'll see if he'll let me post a photo of the brute.

Nice to know there are still some slammer blacktails roaming the hills on public land.

Can't wait to see some pictures. He sure must know what he is doing if this is his second monster. Love to see some big blacktails, hope he lets you post a picture.

Saw some pics and talked to the hunter who arrowed a buck with numbers close to or a little higher than the buck you measured . It was taken on private land in Covelo . I don't think he'll enter it in the Ca book . It really is an impressive buck .

Howdy Roy... Congrats to your buddy on his deer. Always good to see and hear about a good Cali buck. Heck I know they are out there cause you always seem to find them! I 'll keep looking though. Can't wait to see the pics.

Happy trails

Roy, sounds like a great buck.
Excuse my ignorance, but you have stated a few times that your hunting partner has the California archery record. Is this according to CBH or some other group? Because Pope & Young lists the following:
156 7/8 P&Y pionts killed by Steve Bradford in 1986
143 7/8 P&Y points killed by Dave Swenson in 1968

Just something I am trying to clear up.
Either way it is a huge buck.

Thanks
Bill

Great question. Yes this is CBH. You see the above deer entered into P&Y have NOT been entered into the state book, thus, have NOT been committee measured. This is a requirement for ALL state records to ensure accurate and consistent measurements.
