hey guys i am brand new to the forum. I am from the redding area and was wondering if anyone has hunted the area off HW 299 around junction city or in that area. I have always hunted the lower elevations and done well, later in the season. But, i wanted to try an early season pack in hunt with my bow. Thanks for any information

Sorry. I don't have any info for you but just wanted to say welcome to the forum and hope somebody will help you out.

Bigcountry,
I hunted the area that you're talking about once, a couple of seasons ago. My experience, unfortunately, wasn't a positive one. The best way to describe the trip was "CROWDED". Not just by hunters (although there were a few of them also), but it looked like half of the Humboldt State hippies were there too. Every where we went they were there, camping, backpacking, singing, smoking pot, etc. My partner and I got used to the glares that we were getting after a couple of days, but no matter where we went, we couldn't get away from them. After a couple of days, I did talk to one smelly hippie guy, who told me that his group purposely goes in prior to September, because they hate seeing hunters with guns chasing deer. He was less than happy to hear that hunters with a stick and string could chase deer in August as well. He wasn't a jerk, but was probably just as dissapointed about seeing men dressed in camo, as I was seeing dreadlocks and bongo drums!

I don't mind sharing public lands with people, but after hiking for 7+ miles I expected to see more game than people. This wasn't the case.

Sorry that this story is such a downer, but that was the experience that I had.

Good Luck

I see those same freaks in Humboldt County when I go steelhead fishing up there.
Dreadlocks, dirty clothes and a lot of stink.
Damn Hippies.

As RUSH says: long hair, dope smokin' human debris! Makes me want to blow chunks thinking about these losers collecting their disablility and welfare checks. I've neverr met one that wasn't a liberal. Years ago as young rednecks,we found a garden near the middle fork of the Eel river with 6 to 8 foot tall plants. In the middle of the night we hiked down this canyon with round-up and put their pot plants out of their misery. I'am I proud of what I did? You bet!

Hey Bigcountry,

Sounds like you may have gone into Canyon Creek,Number one used trailhead in the Alps. There are lots of places on that side that you can get away from people. Pick a different trailhead or just go past the hippies.
Good Luck,
Bowguy

I have Been in there before and i havent seen that many people but, this was earlier in the summer. but, i do know that Hobo gulch gets hunted more then canyon creek. maybe i will go in around coffee creek or on that side.

Yea one thing to keep in mind. I will not give away the secret spot, you know the one where everyone is already parked when you get there, Ha. The timing is perfect for the complex fire that went off in the alps. Good feed, lots of big deer. If you have a buddy with a plane fly over the alps you will be able to mark some good locations. Oh yea coffee creek can be crowded as well. Watch out for the trails that go 3 to 5 miles. Go further, most back pack hunters stay under 5 miles.
Good luck,
Bowguy

Hobo is a freaking zoo opening week.
You will get run over by the horse guys on those trails and you will have lots of guy's sharing your favorite spot with you.

My recommendation is to go up Coffee Creek and pack into the wilderness area. It is rough country, but then again it holds good bucks. If you back pack in and stay away from roads, trails, lakes and campgrounds you will do better. Dope growers are everywhere but like easy access to water.
