Ridge_Runner,
It's good to hear that you might make it out. If not we'll catch up on the island out there. I hit up the Nordhoff Ridge in Los Padres National Forest. There's a code you're supposed to get for the gate, but they were all filled up (10 cars max) by the time I called. I hiked up to the top of the ridge. I glassed both sides but did not see anything. The acorns were huge and had not been touched. I did see a good amount of bear sign and tracks though. I hiked down about midday and decided to drive up the 33, almost identical to Cache Creek. I went North aways and decided to come back down and head back into Ojai. As I was on the way down I saw a nice buck haulin the opposite way on the other side of the road. I stopped as fast as I could, but by the time I got my rifle out and let two motorcycles pass, the buck was long gone. I glassed the ravine he went down for about an hour to no avail. Either way, there was a lot of traffic and "hunter" pressure. I hope you catch my drift when I say "hunter". The "hunters" that I speak of are much the same as we get up there in Pilot Grove.
As for the country, it was much the same as Mendocino NF, but not as many trees and a hell of a lot more mountain bikers and hikers. The country adjacent to A-Zone down here, D-13, looks pretty promising and I might put in for that in October. As bad as it was, it was sure better than sitting at home. Talk to you soon, know this, A-Zone may come to a close but D-Zone is just around the corner. There will be buck in my freezer by years end......
