LAST EDITED ON Aug-29-05 AT 10:43PM (MST)[p]This is a picture of a nice 18 inch three by three buck I killed in 2004 at Ruth Lake. I was sitting on a large rock overlooking a grassy field and some oaks. My father was on the next ridge over with a spotting scope since he had killed a buck off the same rock a week before. We were using Motorola walkabouts to talk back and forth. The last half hour of shooting light, he spotted a deer in a grassy bowl behind me. He then told me he couldn't make out whether it was a buck or a doe. Because there was very little deer activity in the fields below me, I decided to hike up the small ridge between me and the grassy bowl. Once I reached the top of the ridge, I peered over into the grassy bowl. I could see a lone deer about 250 yards across the field. Shouldering my rifle, I could then see it was a legal buck. I flipped down my bipod and kneeled to see if I had a steady shot. Shouldering my rifle once again, I could tell that I was too low on the ridge to shoot and was forced to crawl another 15 yards up the ridge to get the tall grass out of my field of view. The buck, at this point, had no idea I was there and continued feeding. Finally reaching a better vantage point, I took a second for a few deep breaths. As you can tell in the picture, I am not exactely a long distance runner, ha ha. Drawing a bead on the buck, I steadied myself for the shot...holding my breath, I squeezed the trigger and let lead fly. Getting him back in the scope, I hoped to see legs up in the air. Unfortunatly, I saw a large cloud of dust and the buck running through the field towards me. At that point, all bets are off. World War Three erupted. Fortunatly for me, my three hundred short mag only holds three rounds. On my third and final shot, I heard a lound WHOMP. Instantly the buck humped up and waddled behind the nearest rock outcroping. Knowing I hit him, I began to reload. Just then, my father came over the radio asking if I got him. Scrambling to turn the radio volume down, I answered, "Yes, I think I got him!" I then noticed that the buck was up and moving toward the top of the ridge above me. I got two more shots off before he got over the ridge. I then walked to the top of the next ridge where he went over and could see him bedded down. I took one more well placed shot that caught him in the neck, which you can see in the picture. Unfortunalty, I didn't have a camera until I got back to the truck.
