I'm planning a trip in '07 and have already searched the forum for info (alot of good stuff). I was wondering what kind of pack frame to take? I have the Cabelas Alaskan, but was wondering about taking one on a plane. Any suggestions on a smaller or lighter one would be appreciated as well as any other helpful info or tips.

Thanks,

For us non-residents, hunting in Alaska can be a logistics nightmare. I used the Cabelas Alaskan pack on an unguided caribo hunt one year. I mailed it, along with my stove, food, and other gear up ahead and then mailed it all back after the hunt. Paying the airlines for extra baggage would have been a lot more expensive. If you have a contact up there you might think about that.

I took my pack on a Super Cub no problem. Sure was nice to have that pack with me.

Good luck, keep us posted.

External frame pacs work pretty good but you will be cussing it if/when you hike through the alders. I used an external a couple times then bought an internal frame. The alders are still a nightmare but I don't hang up as much as I did with the external. What month are you planning to come up. If its Aug-mid Nov you will probably be hiking to the deer, if its a late hunt you will probably be shooting them off the beach and won't need to pack meat anyway. You can mail it up general delivery and pick it up at the post office. They will hold it for a couple weeks. Or you can send it to me along with all your other hunting stuff and I'll make sure you get it (after I've borrowed it for a little while) : )

I'm hoping to go early in November, and probably will be hunting out of Akhiok with Alaska Coastal Marine. Still have some homework to do but I have 4 friends plus myself that want to go. Been wanting to hunt Sitkas for a few years now and figured I might as well do it. Using this as a scouting trip so I can take my son up on a hunt after he graduates highschool in 2012.

I use the QuikPacker by Cross Creek Trading Co.

It's a 3/4 size collapsable frame pack, just the right size for a boned or field quartered blacktail buck. Mind you, it's not a moose or sheep or goat sized pack. I've packed out about 20 Sitka's with mine. A day pack slips inside the webbing quite conveniently and you can simply lash extra layers of clothing (usually a jacket) onto the frame. I either strap a day pack or fanny to the frame. You can carry a fanny and the frame pack quite easily.

Best $100 I ever spent.
