The Timestandard of Eureka CA ran this today.
EUREKA -- A man who was convicted of cutting and trying to remove part of an old-growth redwood from Redwood National and State parks in July was sentenced to 120 days in jail Monday.
The Humboldt County District Attorney's Office said Superior Court Judge Bruce Watson sentenced Ronald Earl Vaughn, 38, on the attempt of grand theft charge.
In July, two National Park rangers came across Vaughn as he was splitting a downed old-growth log.
?Wood poaching in the park has been a growing problem for some time, particularly of redwood, as people steal and sell it, often cheaply for shingle bolts or fence posts,? stated a District Attorney's Office press release.
A search warrant
served at Vaughn's home turned up professional appraisals of stolen wood.
?A healthy redwood forest and all of its species needs these centuries-old trees, and our citizens and tourists are being cheated out of this beauty as well,? District Attorney Paul Gallegos wrote in the release. ?We will continue our close cooperation with federal and state authorities to prosecute these crimes.?
Vaughn was also sentenced to three years probation.
Sad to see my tax money spent to put this bad man in the slammer
