So who is putting in for the X zone in NE california. I will be throwing my name into the hat for X5B.

I will be putting in for X5b for the......I can't count the years. That herd is way down from 20 years ago.

I know it sucks to have to wait for ever trying to get a tag. I started hunting that zone about 10 years ago and have been lucky enough to get drawn 3 times with my group. We have got some great bucks out of there. The best was a 30" 5x5, I've seen some that where bigger then that around there as well. Good luck this season.

Jason..
How did you do last year?
I too hunt X-1.... saw a nice buck day before opening morning..
when I got their a group was into a drive..so I went to plan b and got a nice but much smaller 3pt! I hunt on the edge of the zone by Adin(mostly locals hunt there!). I saw you drew the centrol gen area..wish I had some tips for you.. I drew the southern....I never hunted it...soo I asking for a pointing to a general area... I some kind of clue... whoever any new info is always great and you been their offen from what I see!
good luck

Jack, got a nice fat fork last year , pics are posted in here somewhere ,,,, as far as utah if i was going southern which was my first choice by the way , i'd head straight for boulder mt , look on your map about half way between Ecalante and torrey , or grover , or capitol reef ,,,, is little town called boulder just south of boulder mt , we stay in the campground called singletree ,,,, thats where we'd go ,,, hey did you have any points ? we drew southern in 01 and 02 then havent drew it since , is kinda bumming me out , starting to wonder about sitting out a year and getting a point to see if that helps ,,,, down by adin huh ? got the fork out from mccloud east of the pilgram creek road out in the flats aways ,,,,, if dont draw x-1 will pull a C tag and hunt c-2 across the highway ,,,, see you later , Jason

Jason

THANKS FOR INFO! off to work I will PM you later!
RACKMASTER

Been putting in for X5B as first choice since 1990. Drew the tag in 1992 and shot a respectable 5x4 out of a group of 4 bucks that were all almost identicle. As of 2006 I haven't drawn that zone since.

Side note: A year after Calif. implemented the draw system my buddy and I put in for X5B as our first choice (we had 1 point) and X9B as a second choice. We drew X9B on the second choice which effectively wiped out 2 points for us that year. X9B turned out to be a major flop that year. 95 degrees at 9500 ft elevation and hordes of granola crunching back packers everywhere. Cal modified the point system to only count toward the first choice the next year.... so we screwed ourselves out of max points that year.

So if I put in for x5b as my first choice and X3b as my second, and I draw X3b. I will not lose my points? If that the case I am going to start putting 3b as my 2nd choice instead of A. I can always get an A tag.

Yep, that's correct. In fact if I understand the regs correctly you can actually draw your first choice premium tag in the second round and still not lose your points. But unfortunately you have ZERO chance of drawing X3B on your second choice.

Per the '05 drawing X3B had a preference point quota of 815 tags. Leaving 90 for the 2nd round "general, no consideration of points" draw. 3426 put in as a first choice. That means there were 2611 first choice applicants still left after the first round vying for those 90 tags (about 3.4% chance). You have the same odds to draw X3B on a second choice as you do if you just left it blank...

There are actually 4 drawings for Cal. premium tags not 3.
1 first-choice preference point draw; 1 first-choice, no point consideration draw; a second choice draw and a 3rd choice draw.
