Anyone tried this hunt? I've been in the watershed on work and it looks like great country.

I drew it for elk in 86 & a friend for deer the same year. He got a big 4 point but that was a long time ago & the indians wiped the elk out so I'm sure they put a dent in the deer also. We still hunt the boundries with good results. The thing is they only let ya in the gate for the day so no scouting & no camping. I'm sure there are some very nice deer though.

I remember driving out to the gate one early November in the early 90's. There was a truck out there with a big 6 point in the back, I can still remember the red antlers, probably would have gone close to 330. When I went inside they had a photo book of all the animals that had been taken. I recall seeing some nice bucks in there as well as bulls. As noted above with no scouting that could make it a little tough but I bet there are still plenty of nice ones in there. I'd put in for it if you want a big blacktail.

Thanks for the info! I was drawn for Champions raffle buck once and took a decent buck, but I was pretty young then and didn't wait for something larger and shot a. I have been so disappointed with the muley permit trends and chances of being drawn I just might go for blacktail -they always seem to salvage my season.

I forgot who I was talking to, Ridgerunner you've seen that picture of my Champion raffle buck. You probably already forgot about it, it's pretty measely compared to your muleys though....

I drew that tag this last season (2006). Here is a picture of my hunting partner with the buck that I shot. It is at the taxidermist now being mounted. It is the first blacktail that I have ever shot. Needless to say, I was more that pleased with this buck. There are lots of roads in the unit. Beautiful country and you are allowed to shoot a bear and cat if you happen to see either one also. Don't get in a hurry and shoot the first buck you see. You have a week to hunt and you should be able to take a decent buck in that time. I had my 81 yo mother with me the day that I shot the buck and there is a picture of her and me with the buck also. The story of the hunt is posted at www.blacktailcountry.com

I hauled logs out of the watershed for over 20 years for Weyerhaeuser and it is not what it was 20 years ago but it is still a great tag to draw. The Elk are building back up so there are only 6 tags (3 general/3 tribal) but with all of the logged off area and being a closed area for the general public the deer do pretty well. With only 10 tags to draw it is a tough draw though.........Les

Nice pics, I've thought about putting in for the deer tag, I think this year I will definately be putting in for the elk tag though. I couldn't find the story on blacktailcountry.com. Perhaps it got moved or I wasn't looking in the right place, I would love to hear it though.
