Dave is a co-worker of mine. He has been deer hunting for three years now and took his first buck on opening day this year. He started out walking from camp at first light. He came across a fork in the ridge he was following and decided to veer to the right. He hadn't gone very far when he spotted this buck that was feeding and unaware of him, about 60 yards away. Dave couldn't get a shot so he decided to reposition. That's when he stepped on a downed branch that cracked and the buck had him pegged! Dave froze in his tracks with the buck staring right at him for what seemed an eternity. Eventually the buck decided all was well and looked the other way. That's when Dave lifted his rifle and fired. His buck took off running along with two other big 3 pointers that were hidden in the brush. It seemed deer were running everywhere! When things settled down somewhat, he went to check for blood. He could find none. He started to get bummed out thinking he missed. He decided to follow in the direction his buck went and found him dead about 30 yards away, shot right through the heart! A perfect 4X4 with eyeguards. And the season was less than an hour old!
When he showed me the rack at work, I told him he better get that buck measured. I told him it would make B&C for sure!
Since then he took it to the taxidermist who green scored it at 140 2/8!
Congratulations Dave on your first buck! What a great California B zone public land trophy buck!
