LAST EDITED ON Oct-08-07 AT 08:28PM (MST)[p]Every once in awhile even the sun shines on a dogs a$$. My ol man and I didn't draw anything this year so we decided to buy an over the counter tag for S. Oregon deer. We got lucky with the weather this year and it has been snowing up high and raining down in the lower elevations. Last Saturday my dad and I were headed into this road closure area (on foot) when I came face to face with a really nice buck. I shot twice and hit him the second shot behind the shoulder, the buck went about 75yds when we found him piled up under a tree. I hit him the second shot behind the shoulder taking out his lungs. Now fellows I have been hunting all my life like most of us and I couldn't believe how big this buck was. When I shot I new he was wide and tall with dark horns but I couldn't believe what I had done. Now first off I want to clear the air, he is a Benchleg (half Blacktail and half Muley). The buck was a main frame 4x4 with a 2" kicker that made him a 5x4 and another kicker on the same side that he had broken off earlier but it was still about 3/4" long. Main frame width he was 23" and with the kicker he was 25" wide and 18" tall. He is a true 5x4 but you could add the other kicker making him a 6x4, the buck had 4 1/2" eye guards and carried his mass all the way up. The mass was really impressive along with the eye guards. He also had 4 or 5 1" stickers at the base of his horns. Beside the broken kicker he also had broken off a tine on the left side and the right side, if he had not broke those other tines off he probably would have been a 7x5. But like I always say "IF MY AUNT HAD BAL$S SHE WOULD BE MY UNCLE".

I'm sooooooooo excited and proud of this buck and what makes it even more special is my Grandfather who is deceased killed a big buck in the same area about 50yrs ago. Also to share that with my dad was truly special day. I know there are bigger bucks and I know he wasn't huge but with everything he had mass, charcter, eyeguards, kickers, well for me this buck was a real trophy. I don't mean to go on and on but I'm pretty jacked up still. That being said I'll shut up about it.

I don't know how to post photos and I don't have a digital camera. All the photos I took are on 35mm. If I can get my nephew to come over and help me scan and download them I will.

Well done, it sounds like you got a great benchleg. There is nothing better than a dark horn buck with lots of trash on it. With all the long burr points on it I would say you killed an older buck. Great job and lets see some pictures.

I'd rather be huntin!!!!

Thank's guy's I really appreciate it, I'm still pretty stoked.

3fletch, I'm no expert but I would say the buck was around 4-5yrs old but like I said I'm no expert. As far as the pics. I will try really hard to get something up and yes he was a true benchleg through an through. The buck had a HUGE chest, short legs and smaller hind quarters which in our area, that is what the benchlegs usually look like.

Thank's guys I hope you all are having a great season......

Where are you located at? I am an official scorer and I would say you have a great buck. I am in southern Oregon (Eagle Point) and see a lot of benchlegs. The term Benchlegs came from the Eastern hunters encountering them while chasing Muledeer and when you see a cross they appear to have shorter legs than a Mulie! The biggest telltale sign is a striped tail. Some have black tips and others don't. You can also tell by the size or length of the scent gland on their hind legs!!!

I'd rather be huntin!!!!

3fletch, I'm just over the border down Yreka area. He might score pretty well he is symetrical but his forks are not real deep but deep enough. I would lose a little for the kicker but other then that he should do pretty well. Right now he is at the taxidermist but maybe I could get the horns in a few weeks and have you look at them.

Also, I have a Blacktail I killed when I was a kid that is a true Blacktail. He is right at 22" wide and 16" tall one of those basket bucks. He is a 4x4 and really even. Back in 1986 when I killed it a guy just looking at it w/out measuring it said he would go 138 but I have never had it measured.

My wife and I are always going to Medford to shop. I just sold a Jack Russel pup to a guy from Eagle Point a couple of weeks ago.

Slide, congratulations! That's pretty exciting! Some of the best hunts happen on the spur of the moment and close to home too!
