This past week a client and friend killed a phenomenal Columbian Blacktail with the Willamette Tag. It is a Bow kill and the buck is a monster. This is an incredible buck guys as soon as I get permission to post the pictures I will. But it netted over 147 so it will be a top 20 ever harvested with a bow.

That's a beautiful buck. I've officially measured a few huge Columbian Blacktails (168" gross/157" net & 161" gross/151" net) taken with a bow from CA. Your client's is right with them in terms of "monster" category.....congratulations to the hunter on a fine buck with awesome eye-guards.

What a PIG!!!! I have only seen one blacktail from Oregon bigger than that and it is the Oregon record rifle buck! Congratulations on a spectacular buck!

Is'nt that the same guy (Perry I think is his name) that killed that monster non typ last year in the Cali C zone?

LAST EDITED ON Sep-12-08 AT 11:15PM (MST)[p]This buck "WAS" killed last year, maybe he got a C zone buck also... Great one though, no doubt!
EDIT; looking closer there is a strong likeness to that guy who killed that toad non-typ C-3 buck in the low country.

If i'd a killed him i'd either;

"A" Never hunt Blacktail deer again, or
"B" Become a renowned expert Blacktail authority. or
"C" See what kind of Muley tag i draw and hunt Blacktails, every year just as i have done for the past 40 years, when not on that hunt cause a Monster Blacktail buck hunt is fun yet is about as tough as it gets trying to pull a dandy off public land!

Don't think so? put it on your list of things to do next year.
1) kill monster Blacktail on public ground!
2) find duffel of money dropped from airplane in hi-jack gone bad.
3) date Carrie Underwood

Drum roll Please! AND THE WINNER IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joey, you know what I'm talking about. The pics of that lo land non typ were on here last year and there also was an article in CA Game and Fish a few mos back. I could have sworn it was the same dude, but I must be mistaken..............

Yeah howdy! That was a monster buck for sure! I found my June copy, Parrey Cremeans, 31 1/8 spread, over 5 inch brow tines, 6 3/4" bases, 9x9, scored officially at 198 1/8 SCI as a Blacktail-Muley cross! My scanner is bonkers or i'd post a pic.

Smoker buck, in fact, i'll be hunting next week in a area on public land above the area that he killed this toad. Don't mean much but nice to know that the area has the potential for this kinda deer. I've hunted near that drainage for years, never seen a deer that i would call a Muley there. That's blacktail country with a "possibility" of muley genes. i guess only SCI recognises the "Inland Blacktail" in a distinct catagory.

I looked at the two pic's very close. Similar appearing fellows, but IMO, not the same guy.

RE: 158 Columbian Blacktail

Having hunted that area of the C zone a lot I can tell you there are most definately mule deer and or hybrids there. Look at the Fish and Game guide to hunting deer in California, that 30" buck that is towards the back, that came from the same area and it is a muley. Also look at some of the big bucks that have come off the Tehama Wildlife area, those are muleys and/or hybrids that winter down there. The genes get passed around. That is what makes hunting C zone fun though, there is always a chance of spotting a big hybrid or mulie.

RE: 158 Columbian Blacktail

I'm with you sage, blackies with a hint of muley. I don't doubt there is some genes floating around but I think they are mostly blacktails, once you go on over the hill and start down towards the eastern side (lassen/modoc) then you are into the muleys for sure. The other thing with the c-zones that nobody really thinks about is the amount of water on that side compared to the westside of the valley. Its always more green and lush on that side. I would just think better groceries = better horns, but then again, I try not to think too much... haha

RE: 158 Columbian Blacktail

Marburg, I don't doubt that there are a few muleys about these foothills. A few, darn few! I've been living and hunting out of Chester for 24 years and just hunting here years before that. I have only seen one buck, from here West, dead or alive, that i would say was close to pure muley. From where they said that buck was taken, i'd bet my paycheck that either it's mother or father, possibly both, was mostly Blacktail. Without putting my hands on the buck or anything short of a DNA test, it's tough to call.

That said, many years ago there may have been more muleys in these parts so that's why the distinction between deer taken on one side of I-5 and those taken on the other. The system might not be perfect or exact in all cases but seems pretty fair

I think it's great that SCI now has a category for these possible cross bred deer, "Inland Blacktail", it's about time and would give credit to a possible cross bred buck that could never compete against the pure bred big boys from farther East.

Blacktailslayer, That's my story & i'm sticking to it. i agree and, Thanks!
