i am looking to come to california for a blacktail to be closer to completeing my deer slam. what would be the best unit for over the counter tag for a decent buck. and best time to go. thx for your help.

You can get an archery only tag for all the A,B and D zones. Basically everywhere except the tags that are in the X and C zones. And a few other draw ony tags. A is mostly private land. B is north of the bay area. And the D zones are in the sierras. You can get a C tag over the counter but it needs to be your first deer tag. You can get two deer tags in CA. All of the areas are tough to go with a bow without having familiarity with a particular spot. If you are looking for a "true" blacktail ,one that could qualify for P&Y you would only look at A and B zones. D and C have Mule/blacktail hybrids officialy, if that kind of stuff matters to you.

B zone in September -- you can reasonably expect to have a chance at a very good, if not book, buck on public land. Hint, look at the vast expanses on wilderness areas to the north. It's a matter of the work (physical) you are willing invest.

"B" zones and only the northern portion of the "A" zone is what qualifies as a true Columbian Blacktail. Basically, everything north of the Monterey Bay (for the A zone) will qualify.

If you go to B zone in September you will be a month late it opens the 3 weekend in Aug. B4 in July. and pack some shorts it will be hot.

Target one of the Northern Wilderness' for sure.
Come between the opener which is normally the 3rd weekend in August and the end of the first week of September.
Most of the wilderness' have a certain feed that goes away toward the end off August in the alpine basins..this combined with the bucks antlers shedding and becomming hard sends them into the brush and Timber.

Like all early Archery hunting it is best when the deer are soft antlered and out in the open.

You should be able to find a buck in any wilderness areas with a little help from the local DFG biologist for the area you choose.

Good luck with the slam,

BG
