I just picked up a trail cam a few weeks ago and man am I having fun. I've got a ton of pictures in the 3 weeks i've had it set up. No huge bucks but a few decent ones. I have 6 different bucks and 2 different bears coming in right now. Can't wait to see what else wanders by...

Great shots. Beautiful location too. What do you use to attract both deer and bears?

Thanks for sharing.

I just went down to the feed store and picked up a 50lb bag of salt with trace minerals. I mixed it into the top few inches of dirt, boy the critters sure keep it tilled up looking for every last kernal of salt. I just put another 50lbs on tonight, man they love that stuff. I'm hoping I can get the soil saturated with the salt and minerals so it becomes a long term mineral lick.

I'm getting a little frustrated, the bears are hitting it hot and heavy but I think they are making the deer a little shy. I went out and checked it today and all I had were bears?

Before the bears started coming in the deer were in there everyday.

I guess I was wrong, the deer are back, I've seen a couple great bucks about a 1/4 mile from my camera, I'm hoping they find their way by. These are some of the few that have come in at night, almost all the activity is during the day and a lot of it mid day?

That's a good reminder. Deer move a lot sometimes during mid day. A good time to be out hunting instead of taking a nap, like I usually do:)

Thanks for the post. I have tried a bunch of different salts and can't get anything to come in!!!??? I know the critters are there 'cause I see them on my property, but I can't seem to get them to hit the salt areas. Any suggestions? The salt is by a main trail and near water.. thanks for the help.

This is my 1st stab at it, must be beginners luck. I just found a good trail and spread it out and almost instantly they started hitting it. I just went out with a buddy to help him find a good spot for his camera, it's been out for 4 days we'll check on it tommorow.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-01-08 AT 08:25PM (MST)[p]HKShooter: If the animals are getting enough minerals from the food and soil in the area they will not hit your salt licks like the ones that need the minerals. You may have a natural mineral spot in your area and they prefer the natural ones over man made. Try to mix your trace mineral salt with the earth and pour water on it to soak in and eventually if they need it they will hit it....

A few more pics, still waiting for the big one to show...

She knocked my camera over after this shot, I had to move it to a different tree and move it up higher in the tree, the bears and elk are getting a little to curious.

Thanks Fletch,

I've tried all that stuff....Deercrack, 4 different salts in bags, 2 different blocks...Maybe you're right, they get enough from a natural source...Have a great season!

I have not had much luck with the Gimick stuff. If you want to see some pictures of a natural lick, look at the pictures I have of Western Oregon Elk, that is a natural lick and they hit it hard..............

coonhound40, elk too! Awesome! That cow and calf is a great shot!

We have some blacktails in our neighborhood that won't even look at salt blocks or any of the other commercial stuff. On the other hand, a place where we backpack has blacktails that are starved for salt, or so it seems. They will literally come into camp and drag your sweaty socks off the line to chew on for the salt. This sounds weird but they will paw and lick anywhere you have taken a leak too. They come in and bug us all night long. Gets to be annoying.

So I guess it depends on the area, and the natural minerals available.

I'm in Eastern Lewis County, I did shoot a pretty nice buck last year but it was up near Packwood. I shot him in December during the late archery season.

The trail cam is about 45 minutes NW of where I shot that buck. I rarely hunt around the house, I guess it just doesn't seem like a real trip if I walk out behind the house. As a kid I killed a ton of bucks and a few decent ones within a few miles of where i live today.

Moved my camera on Saturday morning and tonight, Sunday, I couldn't stand it so I hiked up and checked it. I'm thinking it may be a good start, already got a couple fair bucks coming in after only 1 1/2 days. I'm thinking I need a couple more cameras, last night I took a walk and seen two huge bucks not far from where I had my camera before, a wide 3 x 4 and a great 4 x 4 with huge eye guards, these guys will haunt me until September 1st.
