Blacktail scat Question

I track blacktail deer in southern california. Sometimes, in addition to normal looking deer scat I also find near the track a small pile of what looks like nuts. The shell appears to have a red skin, the shell is about the size of a hazelnut, and there is a small bitter nut inside. The pile will consist of 20-40 of these nuts. I do not see any other tracks in the area that it may come from (ie bear). Any ideas?
