I am looking at getting a good point and shoot for in my pack is there one that any one can recommend that has great optical and digital zoom?

how much you want to spend?

if you want a real nice one, get a Lumix LX7 ($298), if you want a super nice one, like damn near DSLR quality pics you can go for the cream of the crop (for now) with a sony DSC-RX100.

I've been lugging around a canon 7d, but honestly I think I'm going to go the same route as you and just buy a nice point and shoot and get just as good shots without the bulk and weight.

I'm happy with my Canon S95. It is small enough that I have it with me all the time and takes great photos. I think the new generation is S100.

Check out the Panasonic FZ200. Great pics, light weight, smaller than a DSLR, 18-400mm zoom, and you can even shoot in manual mode if you like having full control.

I went this way as I found that lugging my D7000 around is just a little much while hunting.

Let us know what you decide

I would say the best camera for the money is the new Olympus SZ-16. It has a 24x zoom and more importantly has a CMOS sensor that is terrific in low light.
The key features are:
16MP 1/2.3 BSI CMOS Sensor
TruePic V iHS Image Processor
24x Optical Zoom, 25-600mm Equivalent
3.0" 460K LCD Display
Full HD 1080p Video with HDMI Output
Dual Image Stabilization & Movie IS
Built-In Pop-Up Flash
ISO 100-6400
Intelligent Auto, Face Detection
Backlight HDR, Hand-Held Starlight Modes

The normal price is $229.99, MM forum members would also get an 8 gig card as well as a case at no additional charge. Shipments to the lower 48 states would be free for Fed EX ground
