Telephoto Lens?

I recently purchased a Canon 60D for my wife, and am considering getting a telephoto lens for my own use on long range mulies. I am not real interested in spending two grand, but may have no choice. Is there a less expensive option worth exploring that will not compromise the camera's capabilities?

Thanks for any advice.

Look at used lens! craigslist, camera sites, etc! I bought a Canon 200mm F4 lens two years ago off craigslist for a great deal. It's a nice lens for wildlife, especially if you can get within 100 yards.

There are a lot of great telephoto lenses on the market
Sigma makes a great 70-200 2.8 as well as a 150-500 that are way below 2000.00
We are also having a huge sale on all canon lenses thru the end of the year

Canon 400mm f5.6L

You can try and save the money, or you can just get the lens you really need.

Its up to you.

On a budget, this lens will give you an acceptable range, although I would recommend adding a 1.4X tele-converter in the future.

You will sacrifice I.S. but its a good lens if you are on a tight budget.

You can pick a new one up for $1200 if you look around.

In the end, there is no substitute for getting close, but you can get a little less close with a longer focal length.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-15-13 AT 08:46PM (MST)[p]Like has already been said...you need to get close. I have a Nikon 200-400 that I've used a 1.7x adapter with. People see me with it and think its like a spotting scope in regards to taking pics of critters 100's yards away....but thats just not the case.. You still have to close the distance.

Bullskin,

The 400mm 5.6 is great lens, but its not going to autofocus with the 1.4 conv. and your camera body.

If I was in your boat I would get the sigma 150-500mm on ksl.com classifieds now for 750.00 and upgrade that 60D to the 70D this will give you more pixels and it will autofocus with video.

I would take a look at the Tamron 150-600mm as well.

You can waste a lot of time and money traveling to photograph big bucks only to find you don't have enough lens.

I could type about this all night. If you would like to talk about it more give me a call you can find my number on my web site Monstermuledeer.com Good luck in the field.
