If there was any question whether or not Savage makes an out of the box accurate gun, this should put it to rest! A friend of mine knew I was looking for a .300 WSM and sold me this Savage Long Range Hunter over a month ago. I just got a chance to scope it and shoot it for the first time on Monday. It was blowing 10-15 mph with gusts in the 20's. After one (1) sighter round I shot this 5 shot group.

Then I went back today and shot in a calm overcast day and after one sigther round, dialed in and shot the second 6 shot group. Both groups are at 200 yards with just standard, cheapest bullets I could find rounds, to break in the barrel.
I can't wait to tune it in with some custom loads.;-)

It's topped with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50PA.

Great groups man. I have been thinking about one in 6.5-284 just for fun. Good choice of optics of course!

I am having a friend build a 6.5x284 for me useing my one 7mmREM mag action. All he has left to do is shoot it to see how it groups. If it groups like yours Jim,I will be happy. Rod

That is just one rifle out of thousands and lets put this in the proper perspective. The next guy that buys a Savage may end up with 1-1/2 to 2 inch groups.

Do not get me wrong, I am not bad mouthing Savage on their accuracy. In fact I feel they do put out a very accurate rifle and at a very reasonable cost. What they are doing may make the other rifle makers to tighten up their quality control in order to complete with them. Just do not buy one thinking you also are going to get the great groups posted above. But the odds are with you that you have a good chance of getting a accurate rifle at a entry level price that does not hurt the pocket book as much.

RELH

RELH,
I kind of agree, but also disagree. I think that "entry" price you must include hawkeyes, a-bolt/x-bolt, 700's, etc..., and for my money savage is the best on accuracy. I do realize even without going to the custom shops that we can do better, however for 99.9% of hunters, my self included, can't shoot as good as the gun can.

Second, everytime I see that commercial of a savage out over 1000yrds, I think it is good for us. Look at the new triggers on the rugers, a savage clone. Read about the accuracy of other guns, not stocks, not finishes, not whatever, but how well other guns shoot and I think savage got this started in the entry guns.

Lastly, isn't it amazing that no matter how improved the savages are, to the majority of hunters(maybe not solely shooters) they will always be a 110.

I have a .17 savage, and that was the only thing that changed my mind about them, and yes I did own a 110, the difference is night and day!

When they came for the road hunters I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for the oppurtunists I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for the public land hunters I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for me there was no one left to say anything!

While I agree with everything you just said RELH, this is my second Savage that shot sub .5 MOA out of the box and I know of one other. I'd say the odds are pretty good. I think you would be hard pressed to find any manufacturer that can produce consistent results like that. I've had 2 Kimbers that didn't shoot like that until I had $600 worth of gunsmithing done to them. I think if you get a gun like this you consider yourself very fortunate.

They are definitely not a bargain anymore. I just can't get past that ugly barrel nut, and I absolutely hate the Accutrigger. mtmuley

Awholelottabull;

When you get a rifle that shoots that great, you post a note in the gun safe that states " DO NOT SELL THIS GUN". It may keep you from doing a stupid thing down the line that you regret later. Just like your friend is doing right now for selling you that gun. Do not rub it in too hard on him.
RELH

That's no kidding RELH!!! The friend that sold me this gun laughed when I sent him the picture of this group. In fact, I think his exact words were "Holy Crap!":) He's probably got 4 or 5 that shoot that good or better!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-08-12 AT 00:17AM (MST)[p]Bull, that's some fantastic shooting from a hunting gun. I don't have big enough glass on my hunting guns plus i don't see near as sharp as i used to, so i seriously doubt that i could get those kinda groups at 200yds with mine. Still though, those Savage's and Tikka's are not for me no matter how tight they shoot. Guess i'm too old school but mine do get better than minute of front shoulder and i love near everything about them! :)

Congrats on your new shooter!

Joey

Now that's funny and I don't care who you are, LOL!!!

Savage makes my favorite tomato stake..And the very ingenious barrel nut allows you to have a handy jack handle in seconds!

All Kidding aside, nice shootin 'bull.

Don't be hating on Savage. Just because they shoot as well or better than your multi-thousand dollar rifle at a fraction of the price. Heck all I ask of a rifle is for it to hit what I'm aiming at. No excuses. Great shooting and nice rifle by the way.

Bull, I bought my wife a Savage 5 years ago, basically to save $200.00+ over the cost of a Browning.

Best trigger I own. Sweet, Sweet, Sweet. Gun shoots as good as I can. Your group @ 200 yards would be a top end group for hers @ 100. But very good. Hers is the Weather Warrior.

My next rifle will be a Savage Weather Warrior.

Wow, whoever sold you that gun should be kicking themselves... HEHEHE... I also love my Savage, great trigger and accurate.

It's all about the good times...

They remind me of a pumped up Volkswagon Beetle.... Cheap to build, fast as hell, and ugly as sin:) Wont catch me driving one but you can argue with the preformance.

If a gun performs like that I dont care if it is ugly or not. I shoot recurves and think all other bows are ugly but it doesnt make mine better. The results speak for themselves. By the way nice shootin.

Great Shooting !

I bought my first Savage in 1973 , A 30-06 110CL .That rifle has been with me on hunts all over the U.S, and Canada.Always dependable and the most accurate 30-06 I have ever shot.
I had it re-stocked and mag-na-ported a few years ago ,topped with a Nikon Monarch Scope and it has served me very good.

I have a question about this model.

Is there any flex when on a bi-pod from this stock on this model?

My main short fall on my sav. models when only one has accutrigger and none have the newer accustock, is the flex while on the bi-pod.

I like this model and wondered if the problem is solved with them.

Thanks,

LAST EDITED ON Apr-05-12 AT 11:24PM (MST)[p]Give me a week or 2 and I will PM you with the results. I haven't heard any problems with flex, although I know all rifles do. I think most of the flex that alters the flight path comes from the barrel. That said, I will be sure to shoot it off a bipod next time out at the range. That's a great point and now you have my curiosity up.

Thunder - you make me laugh. I have had some guns in the past that didn't shoot well. "Had" is the key word. They don't stick around very long. Not worth the time or money. Some guns have cost me double just to have them bedded and lapped and they still shot like crap.

I have a model 10 predator without accustock in 22-250 and a model 10 predator with accustock on 243. Both shoot great, but there does appear to be a larger gap between the stock and barrel on the accustock model. Both barrels will flex enough to contact the barrel if you wrap your hand around that forend area and sqeeze. I don't think either flexes nearly that much on the bipod though.

I have 3 savage rifles acquired in the last few years and all are capable of 1/2 MOA groups, and all seem to stay at or just under MOA on their worst day. I love these things, they are amazing.

I shoot handloads in the 243, but spent no time working up a load. I only tried 1 bullet and 1 powder.

I have not handloaded yet for the 22-250 because I bought 10 boxes of nosler custom ammo for $18 a box as an excuse to get the brass I needed. It shoots so well that I hope I never run out of it!

I also have a model 12 F, which is a target rifle, and the first such rifle that I have owned, but it will shoot 1/4 MOA on a good day. The first time you shoot a 1" group at 300 yards is quite a feeling! I also shot a 9" group at 1000 yards with it, and I am very inexperienced with that type of shooting. (I have only been a member of the 1000 yard range for about a year and a half and have shot there about 6-8 times, not always shooting all the way to 1000yds)

These savages are hard to beat out of the box....and thats a great feature!

Anyone have any expiriece with the Lightweight hunter with the Savages? They shoot like the rest of the Savages? Been thinking about getting one, kinda got my eyes on a 6.5 X 284.

I've got a friend that bought one of the lightweight hunters and really likes it. He's said it was really accurate but I haven't seen any groups to verify it. He's pretty picky about what he shoots so I wouldn't doubt it if it shoots like that. I've been looking on the internet and to see what people are saying about the Savage accuracy. All I see are people that like or don't like the accu trigger or accu stock. Some don't like the action but there are very few that have mentioned any accuracy issues. Sportsmans has a hard time keeping them on their shelves so they must be doing really well. Word of that kind of accuracy spreads pretty fast. By the way, I don't work for Savage, know anybody that works for Savage, and they don't sponsor any of my shooting. Just wanted to clarify. We ##### all the time about a bad product so I thought it only fair that I let people know about something good.

It's always an adventure!!!

Had to give in. Got the Savage lightweight hunter in the 6.5 X 284. Shot it today, worked a few loads up for it and overall was happy with it. Wont be that hard to find a load I like for it. Basically what I saw today at 100 yards on most my groups (4 shot groups). 2 shots less than 1/2 inch, then 3 and 4 would be give or take 1 inch.
