Barnes X

Long story short. I aquired a good number of Barnes X bullets mostly .284 and .300 in various weights, he doesnt reload anymore and I inherited them. I dont have much expirience with the old school Barnes X bullets. I dont expect them to be like the new Barnes bullets on the market today. Considering the short supply of re loading items out there on todays market, anyone out there like or did like using the Barnes X bullets for hunting or should I avoid using them?

The bad:
Copper fouling was a problem with them.
Not every gun was accurate with them.

The good:
If you hit something it was just as dead as the current versions.

Do you have a barnes reloading manual for them? I do remember that max loads were alway a couple grains less because they make greater pressure than traditional bullets. Make sure you start low and work up.

-I have fought tougher men, but I really can't remember when-

If you want to save time, powder and bullets. Get on line to Barnes get a phone number and call customer support. They should have data on your bullets and powder giving you info that will help you dial in your load quickly saving your powder and bullets for shooting game. :)

I got lucky and found a load with only acouple of test loads tried in my 280. 150 grain Barnes X under some MagPro worked well. 7/8 inch 4 shot group @ 100, plenty good for what Im looking for. No need to waste more powder or bullets on that gun.

REDDOG knows Barnes, but I think the older ones fouled barrels fairly easily. No big deal with some cleaning. Looks like you have a great hunting load. mtmuley
