Suggestions on scope for 270 WSM?

I just purchased a Remington 700 270WSM that I will use as my big game rifle for out west (from Ohio). I also just picked up a VX-3 3.5x10x50 matte finished rifle scope at a local gun show. Do you think 10 power is adequate for this rifle or should I step up to a 12x or 14x scope? I fugure I will never shoot beyond 250-300 anyways. I have always been a Leupold guy but there is a Vortex for sale in the Classified section that strikes my fancy!

Also, the Leupold came with rings that are the picatinny or weaver style rings, I am not really sure what the difference is. I have been to three local stores looking for a base for a Remington 700 for these rings and nobody caries them.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Erik

I think the VX-3 is fine and 10x is good to 300 yards. Can't really speak for the Vortex, but have heard good things about them.

Take a look at DNZ mounts, I have a few of their Game Reaper mounts on my model 700 rifles and really like them.

At the distances you are talking about, and beyond, your scope is plenty adequate, more than enough magnification.

My long time favorite hunting rifle killed more game than i can remember and it held a straight 6 power scope. The need for really high magnification only comes to play, IMO, when on the bench, shooting for itty bitty groups or way out there farther than i care to shoot.

Check out Evolution Gun Works (google them) for a base/rail... They make a really good product and they have great service.

So should I buy a one piece base? I have only used the 2 piece bases on all my other rifles. Obviously the one piece bases are designed not to interfere with shell ejection right. I do have a one piece base on a Model 7 but is cut out for the ejection of the shell.

Thanks,Erik

For 35 years, my 270 has been mated with a 6X Leupold. Shot elk, mule deer, numerous whitetail deer, coyotes, prairie dogs, and more than its share of wild pigs. I have never felt like I needed more scope. It shoots all weight of bullets, to nearly same point of impact, and will always group a nice tight 5 shot 1" group. When I shoulder this little featherweight, its like an extension of my own body. When I squeeze the trigger, I can almost always call my shot. While not a WSM, not too much less.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-11-14 AT 07:29PM (MST)[p]6x42. you dont need a hubble to shoot medium range, and 6x has more than enough resolving power to double the ranges you listed.

Talley LW lows or leupold Dual dovetail mounts.

I'm a big fan of the one piece base. I just like knowing that both rings are lined up like they should. It just feels more solid.
You won't have any problems loading or ejecting with a one piece. They are cut so it's not an issue.
Let us know what you decide to do. And post pics...
