Just had a smith scope the barrel of what has been my baby for the last 14 years and confirmed my suspicion. Lots of cracking and time for a new barrel. Any suggestions? Kinda like my dog just got hit by a car.

I've been through quite a few with some bad results. Lilja and Shilen have never let me down.

Stay thirsty my friends

Lilja , Shilen , Hart , Brux ,Pac Nor , all quality tubes . Contact them and go with the shortest lead time , cant go wrong with any of them

What do you guys think of Krieger?

Also, this gun used to hold dime groups or tighter at 100yards. I've read a lot of forums saying shot out is in the eye of the beholder. If I can get it to still hold an 1" to 1.5" at 100 yards do you think it will limp through this fall?

Is there any danger involved?

Thanks!

I have owned one Krieger , it wasn't anything spectacular but was acceptable . 1''-1.5'' groups are fine for moderate range big game hunting , many new rifles wont beat that . If you feel confident with the rifle I say head to the woods as is .

I'd say order the barrel you really want in the twist and contour. Different manufacturers have different lead times.

I'd say you would be OK to limp it along this season. Most important is choosing a good gunsmith to do the work.

That's my vote also.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-12-14 AT 06:37AM (MST)[p]A 1 inch group in a hunting rifle is "limping" it along? I've heard that "chasing the lands" will tighten groups in a barrel with a lot of rounds sometimes. mtmuley

mtmuley.......I've heard this as well. Unfortunately I am about out of length due to magazine restrictions. Going to get it all cleaned up this week and see what it will do.

Krieger is one of the best tubes made..a few other favorites of mine are brux, obermyer, rock and bartelien.

+2 on that!

All of the barrel makers named have excellent reputations for quality. That means exactly SQUAT if the person chambering, threading and headspacing doesn't know what he is doing. Unless you have used the smith who looked at your bore before or he has a solid reputation do some research to find a qood gunsmith before you commit to having the work done.
Best of luck this fall!

I shoot an STW, you'll want a 1/9 twist. They are also finicky when near the lands. I'm moving off them and going to 3.640 OAL.
Lots of info and a separate STW forum on long range hunting.

For gun work, call this guy, he's done dozens of STW's.

Ok guys I think I've made a decision. Looking at a Lilja #5 with 1/9 twist. I've been reading up on fluting.......why is it some manufactures curse it like the plague and others, like Lilja say no problem?
