I'm looking for some data for the Barnes 145 gr LRX bullet for the 280 Ackley Improved. I have not been able to find anything real promising yet. Have any of you tried these bullets? I would like to find something in IMR 4350, IMR 7828 or the 4831 powders. Maybe someone can point me in the direction in the way of a link to a website where I can do some better research.

Thanks

"try 41-43 grains of the H4831."

Huh? I don't have my records here but from memory, 43 grains seems awful light.

My 280AI loading is with IMR 4350 and regular Accubonds, couldn't be happier with it.

I just called Barnes- IMR 4350 49.5min 55.0max, H4831sc 54.8min 60.9max.
Velocity is comparable on both 2757-3034fps. Thanks for your help.

Yeah, that's more like it. i'm using 59 1/2 gr IMR 4350 with my 140 Accubonds.

Do Not go by my post here!!! start low and find your own maximum loading a tad at a time and know what to look for while doing it or don't do it at all!!!

Thanks Joey. What action and Barrel do you have? Mine is a model 700 action with a 26" Shilen #2 with a 1 in 9 twist. What kind of pressure signs do you have? I ask because I might just go with the 140grn instead of the 145.

25" Pac Nor #3, Rem 700, 1 in 10"

I started seeing pressure signs at 60 grs and 61 or 62 grains were flattened primers and expanded primer pockets. i backed off to 59 1/2 and they looked good, shot way good.

Again, i know this load is pushing it and don't recommend one to use it unless they take the time and work up to it with extreme caution.

I tried 4831 first but couldn't get the velocity that i was looking for.

Sorry I meant 51 to 53 grains of h4831. That seems to be the node with a lot of ai280's. I am shooting 52 grains of h4831sc. Shilen barrel. 24" 3 shots in the same hole with Barnes 140 TTSX

Again I screwed up on the charge. It's 62 grains I'm shooting. The 52 grain is a different rifle. Sorry for the confusion.

I hope you keep copious reloading notes! LOL

Well,
I just bought 100 rds of brass for a rifle I don't have built yet. I bought my brother's Kevlar stocked 700 06 AI which is shot or "cleaned" out and it'll have a 280AI tube on it shortly. I'm leaning toward a Lilja #4, 9 twist, 6 groove. (I know it's a 3 month wait so I'll be shooting it come Spring)

ANYONE TRY THEIR 3 GROOVE BARRELS IN .284 CAL YET? They claim they're good and I can buy a #3, 3 groove right now.

Zeke

added: CAH805, That's my understanding too. I might just have to try one and report back to ya'll. Just wondering if any of you guys have actually used one. Thanks.

Zeke

The 3 groove is supposed to help with barrel life and throat erosion. It has wider lands and grooves. I wouldn't hesitate to try one. Its more about the gunsmith doing the work and how accurate it will be. Lilja is a great barrel and stands behind their product.

Muzz, thanks for clearing that up. I was wondering why a guy would get and hunt a 280AI if he were only going to shoot it at muzzle velocity's of a 7mm-08 or less. Now i know that's not the case at all.

The findings thru my rifle were that there were little or no signs of over pressure as i worked the loading higher and higher, above recommended max, in velocity. All the sudden though, my primer pockets were expanded to the point of wrecked brass so do keep a close eye when looking for a max load thru your own rifle. I believe this cartridge likes to be pushed hard as most of my testing showed best accuracy at the higher velocity's.

Ya I take notes, keep targets also. Really looked like I was lost with my posts. I'm loading 4 different rifles. I keep my targets to show what loads I'm using , temp, powder bla bla. I'm going to try a different load in the 49-51 grain range, my primer pockets are a little loose with the load I have and I don't feel good about that. What's the velocities you are getting with the 4350? Is the imr 4350 temp stable?

My 140 Accubond groups with 4350 averaged 3250 FPS, haven't noticed any problems with temp sensitivity. This is just a nice very warm loading for this rifle, comfortable to shoot, and from it's past performances, i have a lot of faith that it will do most any job that i put before it.

The problem, if it is a problem, is that this complete setup weighs in at just over 10 pounds. It's no lightweight hunter.

I just got back from the range.
My brother shot 4 groups at 100 yards that ranged from .6 to .85 with 61 to 63 grs of RL-22, 140 TTSX Barnes. It's built with a 24" #1 Lilja not 3 groove. Pretty impressive for their lightest spotter barrel. I still think I'll buy the #3 3 groove.
He also shot 3 groups with his 225 win TC super 14 contender that all went right at 1.5" with a 4x scope.
We had a good day!
PS: his velocities went between 3200 and 3300fps. I think he'll stick with 61.5 grs of RL-22 average fps was 3240. Better than good enough!

I just got back from the range and my 61 grains of h4831sc shot the best. Chrono at 3084-3100fps. 24" barrel . 140 ttsx.
Do you think another temp stable powder could produce better velocities ?
I'm shooting the same speed as my 280 did. No improvement on speed.
