Kind of slow here so thought i might stir up some opinions and thoughts on what "hunting rifle", we'd like to add to our own firearms portfolio.

Could be a specific cartridge, chambering, type, make of, and/or made by. If you suddenly had the wants and means of another one, What would it be?

Being i have the floor, I'll go first: I'd love to have a completely gone thru light weight, 22" custom barreled, Rem 700 in 7mm-08. It would have a bueatiful and very nicely fitted burl wood stock on it.

What would you want?

Joey

I would love to have a lightweight rem. model 700 in 218 Bee. I think that would be a great gun for calling predators. I really like the old cartridges.

I've got the lightweight covered. I think the next one would be a long range Range Gun. I'm still looking for a donor action and since I'm left handed, it might take a while. As for the caliber, I'm thinking WSM or .308 Norma. Like I said, it's for down the road.

Model 7 remington, krieger barrel in 7mm-08, mcmillan edge stock and a timney trigger. And/or savage 338 lapua with nightforce shv scope

Sage I'm with you on the caliber part, I'm a huge fan of the 7MM-08. I'm currently collecting parts for my 4th one which I hope will be the bestest of them all:)

Plans are for a Pierce Ti short action which I need to order, Bartlein "2B" contour 1-9" twist barrel fluted & finished @ 22.5". Shilen trigger, PTG Oberndorf aluminum bottom metal and probably go with a McMillan Classic Edge stock or maybe try one of the Manners Elite Hunters. Should have it all together by next year. Its an addicting thing!

All great replies guys, Thanks!!

This is a easy type of thread, one that be lots of fun. It's kinda like Dogs. Sometimes you can tell a bit about a person by the kind of Dog they have. Same with Cars, homes, and Women. Guns too, they go in there someplace and i just like to hear what different people want, like, would love to have given the chance.

I said "easy type" of thread because there is little chance of a pissing match and resulting hard feelings lingering between participants. What a guy wants is an individual thing for his own reasons. Seems that there shouldn't be any debate.

Unless a guy comes here and says something like, I want a SO and So, with this and that, basically because, it's way better, faster, hits harder, looks better, costs more, shoots tighter,.. than what you guys are shooting. ...If that happens, all bets are off, then we could possibly have problems! lol

What do you want??

Joey

Well, I like rifles! Any caliber and cartridge which shoots better than needed for it's intended purpose.
I'm always the first (maybe) to encourage a guy to get a new rifle. Why not? They're pretty cool and this is still the USA!
Ok Joey, probably a 6.5 BPX with a lilja #5 on a blue-printed 700.
I've got to finish my 280AI. My brother's is done and shoots like a dream. Mine will have a #3 where his has a #1 contour. I now have everything except the barrel. I'm looking for donations totaling $340 so I can order it.
Hunting got in the way however. I've been to Wyoming twice and will return a minimum of 2 times....maybe.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-22-14 AT 04:26AM (MST)[p]Muley, being you're getting what you want, might as well ask for something Awesome! lol

Zeke, well you had me there, i had not heard of a 6.5 BPX so i dug around and the rest of us might as well learn something. Correct me if i'm wrong please.

The 6.5 BPS is based on a 6.5X284 Lapua case. The case is highly modified and improved to, end goal, be able to perform well against the other non magnum "short Action" 6.5's.

Zeke, a admirable project!

Who else? Who of you wouldn't mind getting a ...what? :)

Joey

Correct again Joey!
The purpose is to achieve a cartridge which will work well through a magazine gun, bullets seated long and proud, case powder capacity is maintained and near 100% density. It should be something fun to play with and pretty good on deer and antelope too.

I have a buddy who builds long rangers and it's one of his favorites. I wouldn't need to pioneer anything, just follow footsteps here (form, trim, turn, deburr, and uniform a bunch of brass. No time for TV). Oh, and he'd chamber and fit the barrel for me too.

He's doing my 280AI and askes me almost every day if I've ordered the barrel. It will be blue-printed, speed striker, Bushing'd bolt face, over-sized recoil lug, 9 twist #3 Lilja. I have the scope, 100 rounds of Nosler brass, Kevlar stock and the action already. I still need those donations for the barrel! LOL

Well done Joey,
Zeke

A near mint condition pre-64 Winchester 70 in 375 H&H

I would just sleep better at night knowing I had one in my gun cabinet.:)

Eel

Eelgrass, i'm curious, would you keep it stock with the iron sights or put some kind of scope on it?

That could be your Alaska rifle!!

Joey

"It's all about knowing what your firearms practical limitations are and combining that with your own personal limitations!"

Joey, I would leave it stock for now. I have a Remington 700 BDL 300 Win. Mag. that just loves to shoot good groups that is my confidence gun. I even got a box of Hornady GMX 160 gr. to try. It's a no lead bullet, in anticipation of the CA lead ban and they shoot about a 1" group at 100 yards. That's through a Leupold straight 6X scope to boot. My 180 gr. Remington Core-lokt shoot the same. I would look for a tougher bullet if I was to head to Alaska for moose or bear, of course.

I feel like I might be sounding like an idiot compared to you and some of the other true shooters around here:)

Eel

Thanks Steve, makes sense to me.

lol, "true shooter"? I'd like to be able to make that claim but i'm not and i can't. Though i generally can hang in most disciplines and have probably put more shots out the tube than most, i'm no where near the shooter or great shot that are most of the guys serious in the shooting sports world. I always thought of myself as more of a hunter that likes to shoot that a shooter that likes to hunt. Hunting firearms and their abilities greatly interest me, they have since i was a child.

I do appreciate the complement though and will accept it for those here that probably do deserve it. Thanks!!

Joey

Graysage,You Bet, Why Not? That's a very desirable setup, count me in too.lol

witwell, I killed a few blacktail with a old long tom with a octagon barrel in 30-30. I missed a few too! ;-)

My old hunt pard has a 92 in 32-20. He says he likes to shoot it more than any other firearm that he has. Here's a pic of one i found for sale. Not cheap, over $2000.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-12-14 AT 10:57PM (MST)[p]Not lookin to add on right now, even tho the wish list is long..But I've been working on re-purposing some rifles that never get shot.

One i'm working on right now is a 280AI, found an un-fired Rock Barrel, already chambered/threaded for 280AI/700 for a good price.

Parts:McMillan GameScout EDGE fill, Rock 1-9" #3 (previous owner already had it coated, and 100 Lapua 30-06 cases destined to have the suck necked out of them ;)I've got a one piece bolt on order from PTG as well(the reason I love the 700 action..make it what you want).

The donor on the chopping block started out a a rem classic 35 whelen..nostalgic guys would cry that i tripped the stock and barrel years ago and put an a LSS and CDL tube, also in 35W..Rifle has been out maybe 3 times in 10 years..I killed an elk with it, my brother killed a few deer..Nice performer, but i'll shoot the 280 MUCH more, so she's history.anyone that wants the 35W parts speak up..

I got a new one Joey:)

A friend of mine (he's 92 years old) has been in a rest home for about 3 months. He's not coming home unfortunately. I go visit him about twice a week. It's hard to do but he likes to see people. We duck hunted and deer hunted together since the late 70's.

He gave me the key to his house and the combination to his gun safe and asked me to go and put a coat of oil on all his guns. He's worried about them rusting up. Sure, be glad to. His only son lives in TN. I called him and he said absolutely, go ahead, and thanks!

It took me about an hour and a half. He's got 16 long guns and three hand guns.

The last one was tucked in the back in a cloth case. It's a LC Smith side by side 20 gauge. Highly engraved and looks to be un-used condition. The barrels inside look like a mirror. I have no idea the model number (I forgot to look:(). It was love at first sight. It feels perfect in hand and mounts like it wants to shoot. Light weight to boot! What a master piece, IMO.

I just know I wanted it!

I later asked him about it but he couldn't remember that he had it or where it came from.

I may do some research on it and see about buying it. I like it that much.

Eel

Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-22-14 AT 00:30AM (MST)[p]Steve, Before you research it, maybe you just ought to offer your friend $5oo. for it. You can honestly say that you have no idea what it might be worth on the market but that's what you can comfortably afford for it and that you really want to buy it.

If it were me sick in that home, that gun was in my safe, and my old buddy wanting to buy, i'd probably want him to have it...It's possible he'll give it to you.

The very best time to give your gun(s) to those who you want them to go, is maybe after you stopped going but while you're still alive and kicking!

Off the top of my head, i've no idea what a clean LC Smith 20 side by side is worth... but good quality vintage American made doubles are in demand and i'll wager it probably could fetch more than you'd want to pay to own it.

Anyway, If it don't work out, i got a decent 20 side by side i'll sell you reasonable :)

Now you're talking Mr Eel.
I'm an old shotgunner and wasn't even thinking about scatter guns when Joey started this fun thread. This opens an whole other avenue.
I hope there's a way for you to procure that little beauty. At least let your wishes known to your friend and son so you can get in line.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-24-14 AT 00:52AM (MST)[p]805, have you shot the Rock bbl yet? I have two now but havent shot either of them, almost hate too haha..He got so popular so fast that owning one of his barrels is almost a myth.

Brux is fast becoming the same way, as is bartlein. I talked to Norm at Brux the other day and they are busier than a 3 peckered goat, but they still pick up the phone, unlike Rock Creek.. I guess Mike Rock could give a chit if he gets another order for awhile haha..good stuff sells its self i guess.

Joey, I doubt anyone loves the 25'06 more than I, but its a simple fact that the 6/06 stomps all over it..Bullet manufacturers simply have no love for the quarterbore. There is hope, Lapua took till 2013 to release their excellent Scenar in 7mm, and its metric for gods sake! should have been around for decades for the Scandinavian crowd that flock to Lapua.Maybe a .25 is next?? I sure hope so.

eel, there is nothing finer than a fast pointing SxS over a great bird dog, zi do love me some Merkels or old school BSS/Beretta Silver Hawks..Never had an LC, but certainly would like one..Your post made me think of upland hunting, someithing I havent done all that much since my last "reddog" died. (Viszla/Hungarian pointer) Hope you get that fine scatter gun.

Made me look thru some PB stuff..Somehow I dont have a shotgun pic with a dog in it..dunno how thats even possible, but I guess I never took one..SxS in the pic is an older Beretta Silver Hawk, awesome gun, thats been sitting Idle way too long.

Reddog
I have not shot it yet but plan to shoot it this weekend. Will be shooting 105gr berger hybrids over h1000 in lapua brass lit by a 210m.

I have never had a rock creek but this one came available to me and I couldn't pass it up.

I'd opt for my Dad's 30-06 that he bought when he was a kid and used until we bought him a new A-bolt a few years ago. He thought he sold that gun, Mom and I actually gave a friend of the family money to purchase it and hold on to it for awhile till I could get home from the Navy on Leave. He then brought it over one day and gave it back to him.
One of the happiest day's I ever seen my Dad.
