After having the only 2 guys I would trust reloading my brass pass away the last 3 yrs,I'm looking at getting a reloading setup for my 30-06. Any suggestions? Will look at whats available online.
Currently using 165 Nosler Trohy w/AB & want similar performance.
Is the cost of all involved and lack of access to them a problem? should I just keep stocking up, or try reloading?

If your going to reload I would consider RCBS press , dies and such unless you can get the loading items from your lost friends. Most important thing in loading is safety, knowing what your doing, learn bullet seating depth adjustments, hand weight each load every time. If you have the data on your past reloads your already 3/4 home. That should tell you what powder, grains per load, bullet type etc. if you have one of your reloaded bullets left you can use it to adjust your new dies for bullet seating depth.

Finding components for reloading these days has been a challenge. It's getting a bit better now but depending on the components you reed. Find what you need grab it or its gone.

If you don't want to deal with it then just use factory loads. If you really want to learn loading. Then go for it....there is lots of info on the web as well as in the loading books, plus there are some guys on MM other than me that load all the time. They will help you when you have questions.

Good luck,

LAST EDITED ON Oct-19-14 AT 07:36PM (MST)[p]Get a few reloading manuals and read them, and not just the load data. We must have 20 manuals from Speer to A-Square we purchased over 40 years and it's interesting what tips and helpful info you find there. You should have no problem reloading the 30-06.

The only reason I reload is for accuracy. It does take a good amount of time to go through the steps and end up with 50 rounds. For me, rifles are worth the time. I quit reloading pistols for this reason and just buy factory.

Me as well. I load for accuracy. Once you get a load you like you replicate it as long as you can still get the components. RCBS is good equipment. Might be able to find some used. Look into a chronograph as well.

I've handloaded for 40 years, but to be honest the quality of factory ammo these days is 20 times better than it used to be.

If you want to reload go for it, if you just want great ammo for your 06 the world is your oyster with factory loads anymore.

Stay thirsty my friends

I can get alot of good ammo that shoots very well for cost of all required. I just have a couple hundred rounds of brass. Did hear of one good gun guy nearby(100mi)that can help me.
I'll talk to friends son and see if he has his dads data for Rem.700 30-06 that he had.
Kid is good one, going to take up like his dad.Just has elec.bus.,wife and new girl...he's busy,LOL.
New Nosler Trophy w/Accubonds just showed up in time to dial in for my deer hunt.

Good point. Just about all the good bullets that were only available to handloaders are now available in over the counter ammo. I've chronographed some factory and stuff some of it was a fast as claimed. But not all. May not be worth the investment for just one rifle.

If you find a lot of facotry ammo that shoots well you might consider stocking up with that lot number. The ammo will change on the next run.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-23-14 AT 07:41PM (MST)[p]Factory stuff when I first started hunting with the rifle I have(25yrs)it was $10-20 a box and kinda good. It's $35-60 now and real good, consistant with more punch,it seems to me.If I don't get 1/2-3/4" groups @100,I go with something else. Trying to find same lots is a tough one.
My buddy could find the runs info on a batch and tried to replicate,he was impressed at how good those shot thru my 700.He had 6.
Said new factories, even small, could produce good products, consistantly, mainly due to new methods of production.....til they sell out and it turns to junk made someplace else. LOL,man we could go on...rest his soul..nevermind the rant.
