LAST EDITED ON Jan-18-15 AT 01:32PM (MST)[p]I have a question about my 270 Win. I have my Dads 1945 Rem. Mod. 721. I have had a Douglas Premium barrel installed as well as pillar bedded action on a composite stock. I have used Hornady Light Magnum 130 SST ammo to sight the rifle in and have had great performance from this stuff in the past. I know that Hornady quit manufacturing this ammo and now has the superformance stuff. Is the Superformance the same as the Light Mag? The reason being that I am wondering is that my gun only likes the Hornady stuff. I can grab just about any other ammo off the shelf and try it in my rifle but it will not shoot the other stuff well at all.At 100 Yards It is 2 inches high and right on the bulls eye with the Hornady and then I put some other ammo in on the next shot and it is off the paper!!I know it is not the scope or me because I have let other people shoot it at the range and the same thing happens. I can tell the difference in the ammo because when I chamber a Hornady round the bolt is real snug and with other off the shelf ammo the bolt closes real loose. What can you suggest?

It's unusual to make that much difference.

If you can feel it in the bolt either the Hornady has a slightly larger case or the OAL is putting the bullet in the lands. hard to imagine either being true but it has to be.

If it's putting the bullet in the lands it should be showing high pressure signs with hot loads.

440,
I had a friend take the gun for a couple of weeks and work me out some hand loads. He gave me this info.
Neck trim .0135
Case Trim Length 2.536
Case Seating Depth 2.675
Fed. Case with CCI Primer
55.0 GR of LMR 4350 with Hornady SP 130 GR.
Ogive to Base 3.690 Jump .014

These shoot just as good if not better in the rifle

I guess if it works run with it. it's just odd to have an accurate gun fall all to pieces with different ammo.

My all time favorite bullet in the 270 is the Hornady 139 gr BTSP . if you decide to try a different bullet give that one a try it has a much better BC than the 130 FB you're shooting. I like H-4831 with it.

My wife's .270 really likes the Hornady Custom with the 130gr SST but its all but impossible to find now. Hornady seems to be producing everything in the Superformance load these days.

I tried HSM with the 130 gr Berger Hunting VLD and it did change the point of impact slightly but groups as well or better than the Hornady ammo. Slight change to the windage and elevation on the scope and she is good to go.

Just another factory ammunition alternative for you to try.

Sagebrush,

I have 4 boxes of the Hornady Custom ammo with the 130 gr. SST's (all from the same lot number) that I may be selling. If you are interested send me a PM.
