40x or custom 700

I was thinking of building a custom 308 or 06. What are your thoughts on a custom build or purchasing a 40x from the custom shop? I don't have a donor rifle so I would have to buy one. I have fired a few of the 40x rifles in the past and they were really good shooters. Are the costs comparable?
Thanks

Call Evan at NW Action Works (971) 258-0265. He will sell you a trued Remington 700 action or barreled action at a very good price. Will buid the whole thing too. Before I'd pay for a 40X action, I'd get one of the custom actions. If you are using it to hunt a trued 700 will work. My one trued hunting action shoots in the high .1s and the other in the low .2s with 3 shot hunting load groups.

I'll agree with that and add a little to it. A trued 700 action if machined properly will be just as true as a custom action like a Defiance, Borden or Stiller. What it won't have unless you pay extra for them is a side bolt release and a Sako or (preferrably) M16 or mini M16 extractor and a one piece bolt (no risk of bolt handle snapping off). Once you consider the extra cost of those things you are at pretty close to the same $ as a custom action and the trued action won't have the resale value as a custom action.

Having said that, a trued 700 action and a quality barrel, stock and bedding job along with a tuned trigger will most likely shoot lights out and do anything you ask of it. Just my two cents.

For my current budget, I went with a trued 700 action. I wanted a Stiller but couldn't quite justify the cost ( I didn't add a new extractor or side bolt release). I have no doubt that it'll shoot well - Dallas Lane of Lane Precision Rifles builds some awesome rifles. Find a quality smith and you'll have an excellent shooter.

pacific tool and gauge is selling trued rems with there one piece fitted bolt at a good price. I have not seen them yet or read much for reviews as they are new. But a lot of smiths use the trueing tools that PTG make. I have a one of there bolts that we fitted to a model 7 and its very good.
