I picked up a 1891 argentine mauser with a rusty bore. what cleaner/ procedure has anyone used to clean up a barrel. thanks for any input, ce61

Krieger, Bartlein or Lilja make great replacement barrels for about $350! LOL

Don't use anything in your bore other than a bronze brush and bore solvent. I know some will get on here and tell you to use steel wool but its about the worst thing you could push down a rifled barrel.
If it's pitted you'll never remove them but it doesn't mean it won't still shoot reasonably well (depending on your definition)

Rust is the enemy!

That would work! Why didn't I think of that?

Jb bore paste works very well. I usually wet the patch with kroils then apply the bore paste. Use a undersized caliber brush and wrap it with the patch then 50-100 strokes in the bore then throw the patch away and start over. I've used it on many barrels and had amazing results.

so far I have sprayed gunslick foaming bore cleaning solvent and hoppe no.9. just patches and a bronze brush. cleaned it up a little. then I sprayed a rust penetrating oil down the bore and took a copper choir boy and cut it open and wrapped the copper strands around the brush and ran that up and down quite a few times . starting to look like a barrel again. I have some break free bore cleaning paste and will try that on a patch with some kroil with the undersized brush.
what do you guys think of lead bullets and a bullet lapping compound? thanks for the advice ce61

I've never done it so I don't have a valid opinion.
What the others have said about JB's is spot-on. I use it regularly but it didn't pop into my mind until marley mentioned it.

It sounds like you're making progress but go slowly with all the cleaning. More rifles are ruined by "cleaning" than everything else combined.

If it's truly rusty then it's pitted and scored. meaning, it's junk.

Think of it like trying to buff out a dent.

hey 440, I am not trying to use this rifle for hunting or targets, just thought I would try and clean up a old rifle and shoot something that hasn't been shot for fifty years. I already have one of these that I shoot. I got dies, brass and bullets, So if I can't buff out that dent, other than a couple of brushes and a choir boy brass pad and a few chemicals and some time, I will not be out much. ce61

I bought a pre-64 30-06 super grade FWT one time that looked like new except it had a rusty bore. the rarest caliber and model of a FWT 70.

I spent untold hours and tried everything , I was sure I could polish it out somehow. I couldn't.

like you say you have nothing to lose, I'd try chucking an old rod in a drill and burning up a couple brushes soaked in solvent. didn't work for me but maybe yours isn't as bad.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-19-15 AT 10:42PM (MST)[p]Just keep cleaning it with the choir boy and bore brush and oil. Lapping it will probably do no good as you will have to enlarge the bore dia to really get out the pits and that may be worse for a shooter.

Some guys are able to clean out the bore as you are doing and test fire the rifle and found that accuracy was reasonable for use as a truck gun.

You can also get a Shilen barrel from Brownell's that is pre-threaded in several different calibers with undersize chambers. Price is less then 200 bucks. Screw the barrel on and use a finish reamer to finish the chamber and headspace it with go & no go headspace gauges.

There a few things that should be done to the receiver and barrel prior to screwing the aftermarket barrel in. If you do not have good machinist skills and a lathe, best to leave it to a gunsmith. You might get lucky after cleaning the bore and have enough accuracy that you will be satisfied with.

I took it out and shot it off the rack of the 4 wheeler. Shot about a 2 1/2" group at 60 yards, but with a 8 lb trigger and having a hard time getting the sights and target lined up, figure to do a little better next time out.
Thought this rifle had been shortened and had the stock reworked. After looking on the net I seen that they made a calvary model with a shorter barrel and this is what this rifle looks like.
I made the brass out of reformed 30-06 and made up enough to try a few different loads for the next time out and see if I can get it to shoot better. Was nice to shoot a rifle that I know has not been fired for 50 plus years. ce61

I have fire lapped a couple of barrels and have the stuff to do it again. In this case I doubt I would go to the effort of fire lapping. Shooting it now that you have cleaned the bore some, followed by more cleaning and shooting seems logical for this rifle just to get some enjoyment from it.
