I just got a Remington model 7 in 300 SAUM , stainless , synthetic stock , 22" barrel . I understand that its not a very popular cartridge , but it was too good of a deal to pass up . I have zero experience with this round , but I am assuming it will be very similar to the 300 WSM . Anyone have any experience with the 300 SAUM ? Good ? Bad ? Love it ? Hate it ?

Sounds like the perfect platform for a 6.5saum! Brass availability might be a little tough. The 300 is a great round also.

Congrats, those great deals, one's too good to pass on, don't come around often enough. My reloading mentor has one in your color and has shot it quite a bit. He has expressed to me that he'd go WSM if do overs counted but he does like his, a perfectly fine cartridge for most anything a guy is ever going to shoot.

Not sure if this will become the one you grab before heading out the door or one that might one day be put to use but i'd work on your supply of cartridges. Good luck with it!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-08-15 AT 10:57PM (MST)[p]....find brass for it to last a life time and reload for it.....or better yet....ream it to 300wsm and make life way more simple.......

....should be a quick gunsmithing job...at a nominal fee

I was able find Norma brass available , ordered 100 pieces yesterday . I figure if I can round up a couple hundred pieces of quality brass that should be plenty for a hunting rifles life span , figuring on getting at least five loadings on each brass . If it becomes completely obsolete , rechambering , rebarreling ect. is not out of the question . Im hoping its a good shooter , would be nice to have a compact , light rifle for backpacking and long day hunts . I have a VX3 2.5-8X32 that I think would compliment this rifle pretty well , I'll find out soon .

I don't own one but have a couple in the WSM variation so I cannot help with load recommendations.

There's no flies on that cartridge so don't feel bad about ending up with it. I have a friend who shoots one and has zero complaints. It should work just fine for decades to come...if you own dies and sufficient brass (like others have already said).

If it shoots well, keep it for a lifetime and kill everything at which you points it.

Remember, sometimes the popularity of a cartridge is simply timing. Remington put their efforts into the "Ultra" group before developing the "SA Ultra" family and WSM got a big jump on them.

Given that this rifle has a 22" barrel , I plan to shoot something in the 150-165 grain range . It will be used almost exclusively for deer , so Im confident that a bullet in that weight will get the job done . I will not be attempting any long range shots with this rifle , so a heavy , high BC bullet wont be necessary . If I ever do take it elk hunting I would use a 165 grain Barnes X , Accubond or Partition and have 100% confidence about bullet performance . If I do my part , a premium bullet will do its job .

D6,
Everything you've just said about that rifle/load sounds about right to me.
Now go enjoy a lifetime of hunting with it.

D,

Try a 150 grain Nosler Accubond over 65 grains
of IMR 4350. Start below that, and ease up.
Should be a deer machine.

Ive2143 , That load is one that has been recommended by others as well . It seems like all the different brands of 4350 powder are pretty scarce , but as soon as I find some Im going to scoop it up ! Thanks for the load recommendation , when I get all my components in hand I'll report back any success or failure . If anyone else has any "pet" loads with other bullet/powder combos Im all ears .

No pet load for the SAUM, but the 168 grain Ballistic Tip is a great deer bullet. Jacket changes have made it a lot tougher bullet than most realize. Have read good things from guys even using it on elk. mtmuley

Thanks for the offer ! I think I have a line on some locally , but if that falls through I will be contacting you for sure .
